Actually comfortable sofa bed

We’re moving house soon and will have a spare bedroom on the ground floor. This is ideal because it will mainly be used by grandparents and mobility is becoming an issue for some.

However, because the room is on the ground floor and our relatives only visit once every couple of months, I would quite like it to be used in other ways; I was thinking of putting my piano in there for example.

I think day to day it would be a more usable space if we had a sofa bed rather than a normal bed in there, but I’m concerned that a sofa bed might be the worst of both worlds in terms of comfort?! I’m not overly worried about it being the best seat in the world, but I don’t want my poor old in laws having a really uncomfortable sleep every time they visit (and they wouldn’t tell us if they did!).

So can anyone recommend a sofa bed that is actually lovely to sleep on?! Or am I asking for the moon on a stick?!

We have one that is quite comfy and we use as our main sofa too (so comfy to sit on too). It was a hand me down but originally from John Lewis. It has a Hypnos mattress on it too (as special one for sofa beds, not a full one)

Good luck!

Emma do one one. That looks very comfy

Your best bet for comfort IMO is either a wall bed, or a day bed with a pull out bed under which comes up on legs to sit next to the day bed and make a double.

Either of these means you can have a proper size and thickness mattress, which will be a lot comfier than the thinner smaller mattresses which go into sofa beds. Obviously the day bed with pull out solution would mean 2 separate mattresses though.

Depending on the age of the grandparents, watch the height of the bed. Too low and the elderly will struggle.

We have ikea vimle. It’s comfy

Yes, we got caught out with this also. We did our research on best sofa beds in terms of comfort and ones that also looked like a proper sofa. We converted the room for them and MIL took one look at it and said thats far too low down for me and never slept in it once.

But I think a comfy sofa bed doesn’t really exist as I have had the misfortune of sleeping on two in the past and didn’t rate them at all.

I didn't get caught out by it, jus mentioning it in case the grandparents are elderly or have hip problems, as often, sofa beds are low.

Thanks all!

Yes I actually had thought of the height issue. We have a cheap but cute small sofa bed in our nursery which my brother says he had a fabulous sleep on, but having shared it with the baby when he was teething then having tried to transfer him to the cot I realised how low to the ground it was!

I hadn’t thought of a day bed or a wall bed. I will be investigating those options.

Ours is great as a bed but awful as a sofa
Going to get rid and replace it with a comfy sofa and an air compressor blow up bed (which we borrowed recently and was great)
Cheaper and both a better bed and a better sofa

I bought the Layla DFS sofa bed. It's good for me (but I'm small c. 8 stone) but it's not too comfortable when there are 2 people, my husband thinks it's terrible. The slats are great but the mattress is too thin, I often put a second duvet under the bottom sheet to try make it more comfortable. https://www.dfs.co.uk/layla/yal13klyl

Arthauss do great wall beds which would be best for quality of mattress - https://www.ufurnish.com/en-gb/s?retailer=arthauss&s=wall+bed&last-applied=retailer

Ultimately it's all about the mattress IMO

Wallbeds are also called Murphy beds and I have seen some with an added sofa or desk as an option.

theduchessofspork · 29/10/2023 19:27

I don’t think they exist honestly

Maybe one of the high buffer mattresses you plug in?
