Painting a fireplace

How easy is it to paint the mantle piece? Currently wood and I want to paint it white. Can it be done in a couple of days, or is it best left to the professionals? I can be meticulous and I think a 2 day job can hold my interest, but I would get bored if it takes longer.

It's really easy. We literally just whacked some paint on. Helps its the same colour as the walls. Definitely not a job for a pro. We did this 4 years ago, could do with a quick touch up, but nothing major. (I know, the actual fire is ugly)

Can it be done in a weekend?

Easily. Even if you sand, prep, base coat and two top coats.

Unless you happen to live in a ma sion with a very intricate fireplace.

Thanks @Seaside3 That’s about the same size and shape as mine. I plan to do it when DH is away :)

Did the same. Mine was horrible orange. It literally took half an hour. Farrow and ball.

LadyWithLapdog · 23/10/2023 21:18

That’s reassuring. BTW @Seaside3 your room looks nice and SO clean and tidy.

Yeah. It's like that all the time. 😉

It rarely looks like that, but when it does, o remember I like it.

@Seaside3, I love the colour of your dark blue (?) walls! Do you mind letting me know what paint & colour it is please?

Seaside3 · 23/10/2023 21:25

@CarpeVitam it's railings by farrow and ball. I love it too. Much better than the marshmallow and raspberry pink that was there.

Thank you 😊

I did mine with chalk paint as it's made of poured concrete. Two coats and done.

I had a similar fire a few y ago think it was about £60 bought new surround bit and front grate thing toned it do from yellow gold to black

Seaside3 · 23/10/2023 21:33

@rwalker thanks. I don't use it, so have mirror and various object d'art plonked infront to hide it!

RedRadishes · 23/10/2023 21:35

I painted the brassy bit on ours with black metal paint and it looks way better, if that helps anyone!

LadyWithLapdog · 24/10/2023 20:27

Thank you. I have it scheduled for a few weeks’ time when DH is away. I already have plans for white furniture I’m swapping around between rooms. I’m checking out new curtains as well. I can’t wait. DH is fond of the current colour but I think a change is good.

That looks lovely @Seaside3 🙂

I did ours with a couple of Farrow & Ball sample pots (I already had one left from our previous house, but it wasn't sufficient so bought another...still cheap though!), having primed it first. As it was emulsion I then waxed it with some Annie Sloan wax that was also lying around. Took me a weekend.

@LadyWithLapdog I painted ours black last year using Frenchic's Blackjack. Add their top coat to give it a sheen too.

Wouldn't say it took longer than half a day!
Ours was wood too and very orange! In terms of prep, I used sugar soap to give it a good clean.

That room is stunning, I love it

LadyWithLapdog · 27/10/2023 12:57

@Maddie23 I was reading your note about black paint and couldn’t imagine it, but the photo looks amazing.

@LibertyLily I like the colour on yours as well. Some bold choices on here, makes my wish for white seem quite pedestrian :) It’s a kind of orangey brown oaky pine colour atm.
