Our stairwell and landing gets very little natural light.....what carpet and paint would you go for?

We have warm tones - colours that look good in artificial lights rather than trying to add extra light iyswim. Nothing dark, though.

I was thinking of a gold carpet? Mad?

How gold? I really love warm/ golden/ autumn colours as long as they're not garish. I've gone for a cosy feel, because of the lack of natural light.

We have a dark hallway too (although there's a small landing window it doesn't let in much light) and we decided to embrace the darkness by painting everything in F&B Inchyra Blue. On the landing itself we papered with William Morris Strawberry Thief in indigo and the floor -including stairs - is Little Greene Lamp Black floor paint with decorative papered stair risers.

When we bought the property the hall was all white with grey carpet and it just looked drab.

@LibertyLily. Gorgeous!.our hall landing and stairs are narrow at no point wider than the width of the door

@AutumnComfort. I love autumnal colours too!

I guess you could embrace it and go dark- that does sound lovely. The alternative would be perhaps something like Dulux Light and Space paint and some canny lighting.

Tempted!

At this very moment we're have a gold carpet fitted on our north facing stairs! Sick of greys and neutrals!😄

AutumnComfort · 13/10/2023 16:22

I had something like 'beach' before. Really warm and welcoming (although not edgy and modern... But I hate the grey trend)

HerMammy · 13/10/2023 18:21

I have a hessian runner on the stairs and very pale green walls, it's fresh and light.

I don't mind grey...but I want the hall to be warm feeling

I have read that in those sorts of spaces you shoukd be darker at the bottom and go lighter. So, the gold carpet, then slightly lighter under the dado rail, if you have one, and lighter still above it. Also, you could bite the bullet and have uplighters fitted to wash the walls with light.

AmyJohnsonsplane · 13/10/2023 19:44

Ohh yes now I am thinking gold carpet and paler gold walls

It's little Greene slaked lime pale - the carpet fitter said is was a bold choice! 🤭 I like it it warms it up!❤️

Paint and carpet for dark stairwell
Papillon23 · 14/10/2023 10:02

We ended up using Dulux Light and Space paint in an otherwise dark room and it made a significant difference to how light it felt, but it only exists in very pale colours.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 14/10/2023 10:11

My hall is very dark, my landing is light if the bathroom door is open. My carpet is more like 'beach' and I have soft yellow walls. (It used to be pale blue walls and dark blue carpet, felt horrible and cold.)

If you go with the gold carpet, a lighter version on the walls would look nice.

Thanks for the replies. @Ozzeee I love it...definitely going for gold!
