pendant light for low ceilings

My house has low (well regular) flat ceilings with a single bulb dangling in the middle in each room. very dull. both in the bedrooms and over the dining table (with a basic shade).

I want to replace with something modern / interesting but not shiny or bling. all the websites I look at show off pendant lamps in great big rooms with dramatic tall ceilings which is not what I want.

So I want recommendations for a modern ceiling lamp (or shade) for bedroom or dining room that is suitable for low ceilings.

Any ideas?

Next or a lighting shop will help. Lots of catalogues.

What's your budget and what kind of thing do you like?

Living in a modern but low ceiling house I understand your predicament. We chose a light fitting that is recessed into the ceiling making it completely flat but when in use it is so much brighter. Softer accent lights are used on the walls along with table/standing lights.
We have done this in our bathroom and living room so far with the kitchen/dining room next on the agenda. But are considering changing the spotlights for indirect uplighting which is a much more modern look but won't drop a low ceiling by too much more.

reasonable budget - think John Lewis but not Italian designer

style is modern or scandi but not super fussy as long as I can find something that will work with low ceilings.

You can reduce the pendant length as long as its not too big of fitting they are fine to walk underneath. I tend to buy mine from habitat (argos) as I hate lights that are too bling. I have double lights in the living room and hall so needed something fairly subtle. New build house so ceiling height low.

I've just got these from someone on Facebook Marketplace for my hallway, not up yet so not sure what they'll look like - but definitely more modern than the 30yo pleated uplighter shades that have been there for 20+ years after being in a previous lounge for a few years.

Oh just seen you need over the dining table, you can always go for something a little more dramatic there because you won't be standing so I left the pendant longer. Same with above beds (though make sure you don't flick the duvet when making the bed and hit the light 🙈)

Over the dining table you can go big, long and bold. In the bedroom, you could have 2 pendants either side of your bed instead of bedside lamps if you have seen pendants that would be too big/low for the middle of the room. Another option for lowish ceiling is to have wall lights rather than ceiling lights, or just a simple flattish ceiling light with the interest coming from nice wall lights with colourful shades.
