Painted feature wall - a bit naff?

I want to liven up my living room by painting the wall behind the sofa a deep green or blue. But is that a bit 1990s changing rooms?

for context, I have a large open plan kitchen, diner, living room. The walls are currently painted in dulux timeless. It’s all fairly modern looking with grey marble in the kitchen area and blue velvet sofas and a big modern rug in the living area.

Do what you like if it makes you happy in your home then great.

I don't think a wall painted a different colour looks dated - it can really lift a room. Don't just do that though - add a couple of houseplants, some texture in a throw and cushions (maybe contrasting rust and orange shades) and a couple of table lamps, and you'll really warm the space up.

Have you come across colour blocking OP? It’s slightly more contemporary - could just paint a rectangle behind the sofa and side tables? But if you want to do the whole wall go for it, you’ve nobody to please but yourselves!

Thanks guys. You are all totally right - I have no one to please other than myself! I guess I am a cautious decorator but perhaps I’ll give it a go.

You'd probably be better off starting your own thread, but I'd go for something with more of a fleck. Light plain carpets tend to show any stains.

AnLeanbh · 04/10/2023 13:41

Yikes ..I thought I’d started a new thread 🙈Thanks for heads up and reply !

Feature walls are usually horrible.

Mosaic123 · 04/10/2023 16:53

What about a large painting or print instead to liven up the wall?

Saz12 · 06/10/2023 15:36

I like it when people paint an area in a feature colour - so the bit where your living area is, rather than just the sofa wall, but it depends on layout and must be tricky to decide where to stop!

This with bells on. We have lived in several houses that we knew we would move from so kept a neutral decor tone all the way through the house except for the children's rooms.

This house we have been in for over a decade and will be here for another decade. I embraced whatever fucking decor scheme I liked, colour, wallpaper, whatever because I refuse to live by what someone else thinks is nice, or the latest "trend" ie get you to spend money on changing what you have and were happy with until "someone" decides that this is out and this is in. My Dad worked in textile marketing, so everything from fashion clothes to hand bags, rucksacks, curtains, cushions, even napkins and place mats. He would have loved social media as a marketing platform.

We all have different tastes, do what you like for you.

Warm wall colour for kitchen?? We decorated our kitchen a few years ago and did the walls grey and are sooo bored of it . We want to paint again and warm it up . We realise nearly all our house is Grey and want our kitchen to be interesting , it's quite a large space with a grey gloss table and white gloss cupboards . Please inspire me and if possible add pics . I'm at a loss
