Paraffin lamps

Hi!
These are souvenir miners lamps - I have two.
Using paraffin oil, but as soon as I screw the top on the flame wick goes out?
I have cleaned them out including the mesh.

Is it the wicks? Or the oil?

I would think they need oxygen to burn so screwing the lid closed cuts the air supply off and the flame goes out.

No, I mean the 'bonnet' of the lamp

There should be vents at the base? Are they clear?

Also make sure you use lamp oil, not standard paraffin which will give you too much soot.
