I can't comment on those particular sofas, but dm has a John Lewis sofa that is still going strong after 20+ years of grandchildren and dogs, as well as less hardwearing members of the family, using and abusing it.

Barbiesback · 31/08/2023 16:42

I don't like the legs on either sofa. Have you read the reviews on the images OP? They are extremely poor!

I think you would be better with DFS. Mu soda is still going 13 years on. Or next have some lovely material sofas that look solid.

Crazykefir · 31/08/2023 17:28

The second one is more attractive. I looked at jl sofas but went with DFS in the end. DFS came highly recommended by friends and family. There cheaper and imo the quality it comparable.

Hotflushesinthesunfun · 31/08/2023 18:58

Have you looked at Barker & Stonehouse? I have had my sofas from there for several years and they’re still good.

Aftersunbun · 31/08/2023 19:40

You’ve seen the reviews??

Changingmymind66 · 31/08/2023 22:02

Whatever you go for, think about the fabric. We've had our sofas for many years (next). It was actually a stroke of sheer luck that although they're grey, they've got a texture to them (possibly textured weave?). We've since had kids and everything has gone on them. Flat fabrics like the one in your pic will get spoilt easily when red wine/ ribena is spilt on it even with stain protection.

Beenalongwinter · 31/08/2023 22:12

Dreadful reviews, I would not risk it, sounds like they will be shabby within weeks.

MonumentalLentil · 31/08/2023 22:12

I bought a very expensive sofa from John Lewis. It was supposed to take 6 weeks to arrive. It took considerably longer.
The stitching started to come apart on the cushions after very little use, the legs bent where they were screwed in and it was generally very shoddy.
It wasn't used often and only by me, I estimate it was used for a total of 18 months over the time I had it before it was donated to be used as a dog bed which was all it was fit for.
I wouldn't buy anything from JL these days. Have had many damaged and faulty large items from them and it's not worth the bother.
Reviews are not always honest either.

NewName122 · 31/08/2023 22:32

It looks cheap. Can't believe the price.

Wobblyheart · 31/08/2023 22:58

You need to try them in store. We have a sofa from.john Lewis but a more.expensive one. The easy care fabric definitely proved itself (our sofa is light) and easily cleaned after a.dog.abf a baby. It is well.made and comfy and looks great BUT we had it about a year and you can see the sag in the cushions already. I will be going back to DFS.

Hopeforb · 01/09/2023 07:01

You can try different one if reviews are not good for this particular one. Guarantees and customer services is great from John Lewis. Mine one is grey textured fabric sofabed which my son is using during nights ( opening it literally every night) and unless guests are there our sofa is like a storage for school books during the day !! It is still fine after last 6+ years. Easy to clean and looks good.

Dianalouise · 01/09/2023 07:57

Spent 4K on 2 sofas from John Lewis and they were totally misshapen and looked crap after about 2 years of not very hard usage. They are still dead comfy but look utterly dreadful. Would not buy from there again and I adore John Lewis. Just wouldn’t touch their sofas.

Hopealong · 01/09/2023 08:00

Have had two of the Otley sofas in different rooms and they have been really good, still look immaculate after a few years

Bananasplitlady · 01/09/2023 08:00

V expensive, don't like those teeny legs with big sofas. I also have an issue with sofas with low backs or ungenerous arms. The first is slightly better than the second.

MsDastardley · 01/09/2023 08:19

You would need to try them in store. I’ve tried a few and not found them particularly comfortable. I’ve got Ercol and have been happy with that. I was in Furniture Village a few weeks ago and came across The Lounge Company which looked nice. The sales person said that they were an offshoot of Parker Knoll and G Plan and made in UK.

IME John Lewis guarantee is worth nothing now, and their customer service awful. I bought a smart TV from them, thinking the 5 year guarantee was good. Absolutely terrible. I would never buy electronics from them, and would seriously think twice about buying a big purchase.

DeliciouslyDecadent · 01/09/2023 08:56

Are you me OP?
I was looking at both of those and then read the reviews!

I've since looked online at Sofa.com and M&S.

My house is more or less all J Lewis and I'm loyal to them but the reviews lately are poor.

LibertyLily · 01/09/2023 09:03

Like previous posters, the reviews would put me off those particular sofas - although they wouldn't be my choice anyway.

We purchased a second hand John Lewis sofa on eBay a few years ago. It was a more expensive model (a John Sankey 'Gable' contemporary chesterfield in chenille) that was five years old and in immaculate condition when we paid £300 for it. It was in the living room of our previous house for six years, then in our kitchen here for a further three (we have dogs, although always have throws on our sofas) and apart from one of the scatter cushions getting wrecked by our puppy, it was still in very good condition when we sold it.

TeaAndCock · 01/09/2023 09:35

M&S sofas are great

Notsuchacleverclogs · 01/09/2023 09:39

Ive got a Camber! Not the grand but a 2seater and a 3seater. JL totally messed up our delivery and we ended up waiting over a year for one of them (they delivered it to someone elses house who unwrapped it and used it, then dragged their feet in ordering us a replacement as they tried to make us accept the used one back, then the fabric to match the 2seater was out of stock for ages). 3years on and the cushion filling has worn quite significantly so im not that impressed.

MistyGreenAndBlue · 01/09/2023 09:49

What's with the current trend for really boring furniture?

They're both horrible. Idk about JL tbh but even without the comments on here about the quality and service etc. I wouldn't even look at those. And those spindley legs would give me the heebies.

Toomanygreenbeans · 01/09/2023 10:25

We have a JL corner sofa which cost about 3k 10 years ago - the cushions wore very quickly and it looked old after about 12 months . Also a leather JL sofa which faded very quickly . Would not buy JL sofas again

LostThestral · 01/09/2023 10:47

I don't like the legs

tt9 · 01/09/2023 14:45

another vote for dfs here. excellent quality and great prices

Londontown12 · 01/09/2023 16:35

I have the grande Chester and it’s been fab ! Have the special material that is easy to clean as well x

ASDMumof2 · 01/09/2023 18:42

Ikea sofas are the biz. My 3 seater leather sofa is now in a 4th home having hit 27years of age and it still looks brand new!

2 of the 4 families had kids and pets - they account for 20 years of use.
