Fablon on hearth and fire surround?

I have a really tired, and a bit battered fire surround and hearth. I sugested tiling it, but DH thinks it would be cheaper and easier to fablon it. I'm worried that it would melt or shrink. Anyone done this who could give me an idea of whether it would work or not.

Wouldn't Fablon be a fire hazard?

it's an electric fire, so no open flame, I'm worried that it will generate enough heat to cause issues with it being plastic. DH says he googled and its heat resistant to 80 degrees. But he agreed that if I'm worried about it, it's not worth having so we're going to paint it

It would be cheaper for a very good reason! You can't cover a fireplace in sticky back plastic like a Blue Peter piece of craft.

It'll melt!

I used heatproof paint on mine. It looked great.
