I'm moving into a first floor flat and need to put all new flooring down. I'm on a tight budget.

I have two Oriental cats, one scratches at the carpet if a door is closed and they need to be shut out at night or I'll get no sleep, so a door has to be shut every day!

I'm thinking of getting vinyl flooring that looks like wood and putting a large rug down in the living room, but my mum thinks this will be too cold but possibly very practical with cats.

I'm not a fan of carpets, I prefer wood or laminate flooring, but think it will be out of my price bracket. I can't fit them myself due to mobility issues, so I'll also be paying for fitting.

Has anyone put vinyl down throughout and how do you feel about it? Equally what cheap carpet for some of the rooms would work with cats? And is there a laminate flooring that is reasonably cheap?

Any other suggestions?

TIA

Vinyl can look really good - we have a cheap distressed wood - effect one - but will transmit much more noise to the person living under you.
I would get a very cheap carpet and very thick underlay for warmth and comfort. Not loops though - cats think they're laid just to keep their claws sharp!
