Can anyone recommend a mattress?

Mattress buying seems like a minefield!

Looking for a firm-ish mattress that doesn't need to be broken in for a year before it stops feeling like a rock, but equally doesn't sink in the centre or on the edges.

Has anyone bought a good one in the last 6 months or so that you're still happy with? Looking at the cheaper end of the market, up to about £500 for a king size.

Take a trip to JYSK.. usually a sale on .. my £800 mattress cost me £400 ( memory foam) best mattress I've ever had and you get 3 weeks to try it out.

Never heard of JYSK - thank you! Will check it out. Not really looking for memory foam as it is for a spare room that gets used by a lot of different people so don't want it to set in a particular shape! But will look at the shop.

IKEA! I bought a firm mattress from them a few years ago, it was maybe £250 and it is really comfortable!

Beenhereforever1978 · 17/08/2023 18:15

I initially read this as recommendations for a Mistress.

Must remember to put my glasses on.

ANYWAY. Following with interest as my daughter has just git her first flat!

Another one for IKEA here. Bought one for £350 and we love it. Pleasantly surprised although I read that they come really high in consumer research for price &value. Highly recommend you go and try them all though, some of them I found appallingly uncomfortable.

IKEA hovag

IKEA hovag

The hovag has been discontinued. We've had one for nearly 2 years and it's got some really uncomfortable dips so it's likely we'll be replacing it soon anyway

ElizabethVonArnim · 17/08/2023 21:55

We do have a local-ish Ikea so that would make jt v easy.

IKEA Hovag
The medium firm one is blissful

The hovag has a new name but it's basically the same

Have recently got 3 new mattresses in the last three months or so...

First, an Emma hybrid for my bed - really love it - was about £500 - look around they're always on sale, and there are often price differences depending on the shop. Mine was Argos in the end. It's maybe a tad on the softer side but I'm quite big and used to get aches from bed, and I don't at all now.

Then, this one as the 'cheap and cheerful' guest mattress:

I slept on it for a week while my Emma was doing that weird new-smell thing, and honestly it's great! It's quite firm which I quite like, really even, and 1000% better than my old mattress. Honestly, it would have been fine as my main mattress in the end.

Then I replaced one at my parents where I'd been staying for the last few years - wewent with the one from Dusk as they got a bed from there too. Looks like they're out of the king size at the moment but again I've slept on it quite a few times in the last two months and it's better.

In summary, I love my Emma mattress but with hindsight I prob would have been perfectly happy with one of these cheaper two!

One thing I'd say is I find the dark sides of these new style mattresses a real paid - I always have white base sheets and you can see it through. The duvet largely comes down over it still, but it does annoy me!

Make sure you get one that can be flipped upside down and not just turned from top to bottom iykwim.
It will give you a much longer lasting mattress.

notimeforregrets · 29/08/2023 13:58

I second the Emma mattress - they're fantastic.

SmallestInTheClass · 29/08/2023 14:02

I don't have a specific recommendation but if you haven't had memory foam before then get one with a free trial. We had one that was really comfy but made me sweat like a menopausal woman! I thought there was something wrong with me but was cured by going back to a pocket spring one. I know loads of people who love them though.

TotalOverhaul · 29/08/2023 14:05

I like the Emma. For the first six months I hated it. really aware of the smell and it just didn't feel right. Kept talking about taking it back. then just as we were getting near to the deadline for returning it, it seemed to change. now it is really comfortable, but quite warm.
