Steam cleaning sofa

Has anyone steam cleaned a sofa and been happy with the result?

Thinking of getting one professionally cleaned (it's beige) but wonder if I can expect a decent outcome,

Not professionally but I got myself a steam cleaner with high hopes and was very disappointed. It made everything damp but didn't remove dirt and stains (mainly from dogs). I use it now only for hygiene, especially when kids have nits or bum worms. For stains, I would look for a professional foam cleaner type. Or, given the costs of professional cleaning, just get a throw and cover it all.

Use a foam upholstery cleaner. Use a throw over the clean sofa or get a washable sofa cover. Neither are ideal, but food and drink spills happen, and I have a pet, so most things end up pet-colour.
