Any ideas for this room?

I'm redecorating this games/piano room. It's not the biggest and I am struggling to see what should go where. I need to keep the piano, sofa bed, tv and need some file storage (dont mind keeping/painting or changing the bookcases). I like the idea of one black wall with lots of pictures behind the sofa perhaps so the sofa dosnt look so overbearing- although I know feature walls are dated so maybe not? It is a west facing room so gets sunlight in the afternoon/evening. Open to suggestions!

This is the black wall inspiration

I also like this...but wonder if it would be too dark in reality.

Does it work in practice having the TV in front of the radiator?

Saunaandsteam · 08/08/2023 20:38

No, not particularly. But really haven't put any thought into it before now. Although it is not a cold room, so often just keep the radiator off.

With the black sofa, black TV, I think sticking to a black and white monochrome scheme is a good idea! You could paint the piano white, which is an easier paint job than black (black French Polish is a professional job) and have it in front of a black wall. So I would paint the walls behind your sofa and behind the piano black, and the other two walls white, but take the black around the woodwork across the white walls, to integrate it (so have skirting, door, architrave, possibly window frame in black on top of the 2 white walls). You could then paint the frame of your bookcases black and fit rattan doors to them. Black and white photo wall above the sofa and you need something above the piano - a mirror wall or a large single nice mirror would be great to stop the room from being too dark. Also think about low level lighting, you'll need a couple of table lamps and use them on grey days, rather than the ceiling light. The lamp shades could introduce some pops of colour into the scheme - mustard yellow would be my choice. I'd fix the TV to the wall above the radiator. If you ever feel bored, you could make a rattan fronted radiator cover for it. For the floor, a white and black berber rug is probably the cheapest and most comfy option.

@NellyBarney Thank you so much - I love your ideas. Rattan doors sound a great idea to hide the clutter - any idea where I would source these? I like the sound of two black walls and had wondered myself about wall mounting the tv - the current tv unit would possibly be a good size for a window seat with a cushion. Thank you for all your help!

You can buy rattan webbing at Amazon or DIY store (20 pound/roll). Also at your local builders yard/DIY store, you can buy thin pine battons to make the frame for the door. Cut to size with a hand saw, or some places will even cut to required length (my local Jewsons does).

I think IKEA sells some ready made rattan doors for their furniture but that would take massive luck to fit your shelves, but worth trying.

QueueEtwo · 09/08/2023 19:18

I know this won't be a popular suggestion but I would get the TV up on the wall too!

trickyex · 09/08/2023 21:27

Can you add a simple floorplan?
I think black in a music room might be a bit stark, you could soften the sofa by adding a blanket over the back, will dig out a pic if I can find one.

Thanks for this - none of theirs will fit the bookcases unfortunately but I did see some other doored bookcases that might do the job instead.

@QueueEtwo yes, will definitely try for this!

@trickyex I'll try to do a floor plan. I absolutely love those pictures you have posted, particularly the first one with the green plants. Inspiring!

I think that room works as they have picked out and repeated the black in other places so it lessens the contrast of the sofa.

A warm coloured/textured rug and plants are always a great way to soften a space.

trickyex · 10/08/2023 11:23

From what I can see of the space, could you try the sofa where the piano is and the TV in front of the window, piano where the sofa is. Perhaps keep only one bookcase (or try to replace them with a vintage one to tie in with the lovely piano)? I would lose the wall shelves.
A floorplan even a sketch would help.

Saunaandsteam · 10/08/2023 11:37

A very rudimentary floor plan

Looks like its best to have the sofa on the long wall as you do and tv opposite.
I would try to get the storage on the long wall too and leave some space around the piano so it doesnt overlap the sofa.
Maybe streamline the bookcases into one so its less cramped? Some art above the sofa (and clock into the kitchen?).

trickyex · 10/08/2023 22:10

or even a low bookcase under the window?

Saunaandsteam · 11/08/2023 10:55

Thank you everyone for all the suggestions - will be trying to move the furniture and (very heavy) piano around today to see what the various options look like. Will then start painting!
