Are chimney breast feature walls a bit passé now?

I’ve found a really striking wallpaper which I love, and I’m thinking of putting it on the chimney breast wall (living room) and then painting the other three walls a colour that’s picked out of the paper. However I’m worried that it’s a bit ten years ago… any thoughts either way?!

Sorry I think it is a bit traditional now. But then if you love the idea, why not!

Or could you use the wallpaper elsewhere, in a downstairs loo perhaps?

Most houses I've seen have a second wall with the same colour or wallpaper. They're a bit passé but that's probably because everyone has moved on to colour drenching where walls, skirting boards and even doors are all painted in the same colour.

I've fallen in love with a couple of mural wallpapers so they'll only be going on one wall. I love them so I don't care if they're the latest style. Though I guess my choice of bold paint colours is still a bit influenced by the colour drenching trend.

I have a navy painted chimney breast and I absolutely love it.

I'm really not bothered if it's passe as I'm the one who has to see it everyday (well also DP and DSs but they don't really care!)

It was painted about 2 years ago now and I still look at it and think how much I love the colour😄

If you like it, do it!

I think it depends whether the wallpaper is dated or not.

My parents have just done yellow bird-print paper on their fireplace wall and soft yellow paint everywhere else - it looks really nice but yes, probably a bit dated as a trend. Ironically they replaced William Morris wallpaper they’d had for the last 20 years that’s much more fashionable now😆

Do a longer wall with the wall paper and then paint on the other three walls?

JesusHRooseveltChristSassenach · 13/06/2023 18:21

Screw what anyone else thinks and do what you love. It's you who has to live there.

Spoken by someone with a hideously garish marmite style chimney breast feature wall 😂😂😂

But I love it and it ain't going anywhere!

I'd do the chimney breast a plain
colour and the alcoves either side in wallpaper.

If you like it, do it. Decorating to be on trend is weird. Despite any trends, I tend to prefer a slightly more generous use of wallpaper, though. Somewhere halfway between the current maximalism trend (wallpaper on all 4 walls plus ceiling plus matching upholstery and curtain fabrics) and a single feature wall/chimney breast.
