Should add walls and bed are grey and it doesn't get a lot of light

Swoon has a lot of nice art deco-y looking stuff! Maybe can get something with gross or brass handles to match the light fitting?

CarrieMoonbeams · 31/05/2023 01:04

Oh I love Strawberry Thief!

Personally I'd go for something simple like this. It'll go with anything, it's a classic unfussy design, and the oak top will work well with your oak flooring.

i see at least 15 different colors of strawberry thief. can you narrow that down for me?

PatAndMat · 31/05/2023 03:09

William Morris is more Arts and Crafts / Pre Raphaelite movement.
That’s if you want to keep within the same period and theme .

For furniture it’s oak.- light.
Thinnish legs
Overhanging tops
Sometimes detailing like lilies in the wood.

For furniture shapes and design ideas consider Charles Rennie Mackintosh.
But some of his chairs need better engineering to hold their shape.

As other posters have said, William Morris is Arts & Crafts, not Art Deco....but obviously you might be looking to mix styles rather than going for one specific look.

We used to collect Arts & Crafts Movement and Art Nouveau furniture and had lots of textiles (curtains, cushions etc) in those styles to complement it as well as Pre-Raphaelite prints on the walls. The majority of typical Arts & Crafts furniture is light/medium oak which looks lovely with the Strawberry Thief pattern.

These days we have a more eclectic vibe including some mid century pieces and earlier stuff too, but have mixed these in with our remaining Arts & Crafts/Nouveau furniture and it still looks good. We have indigo Strawberry Thief wallpaper in one room and have coupled it with a pale blue oriental console table, original Art Nouveau lamp etc.

We always found eBay to be a good source of Arts & Crafts Movement furniture plus there are some specialist dealers about that we purchased from in the past. Edwardian oak through to the 1920s (and some 1930s) can be a slightly cheaper alternative whilst still having the simple lines of the style. Going into the 1940s you get a heavier, clumsier (imho) style which isn't as nice but is definitely less expensive.

Where are you based? Around where we are arts and craft furniture is often quite cheap and great quality from some of the antique and nick nack shops

teenagersandatoddler · 31/05/2023 09:42

@HesDeadBenYouCanStopNow - thank you for your reply. I am in Brighton

I imagine Brighton is quite expensive. Im in the midlands and there are half a dozen antique shops near by with good quality furniture for great prices

PatAndMat · 31/05/2023 10:27

Have you tried Brighton and Hove Auction house.

Susan2 · 31/05/2023 11:34

Have you tried The Old Flight House at Weston on the Green north of Oxford, nr M40 jnc. It is a big building and good for smaller items. We bought a Mid Century sideboard.
