Window cling stained glass (pic)

I've recently put a map up next to the front door which I love, but I'm worried that the sunlight streaking across it will fade it.

Can anyone recommend anything? I don't want anything too 'heavy' as the view is lovely. But a lighter stained glass effect might add something even if it was just the corner panes. Most of the sunlight seems to be coming from the top right pane.

Each little pane is 21x 24.5 cm

Many thanks

Could you put up a little shelter attached to the wall above the door outside which would block light from above without impeding the view at all? I'd worry that film on windows wouldn't block the bits of the light that cause fading.

Unfortunately it's a listed building (grade 2) so we wouldn't be allowed to put up anything outside. Good idea though -I'd love a porch!

Go to a copy shop. Make 5 big A3 photocopies of the map. Every 5 years replace. After the 20 year mark, the fading will be charming.

Exactly this. The glazing/ map/ door set up is gorgeous, you’ll change that if you add anything.

Grin I wish this would work. It's sort of laminated and pins go in it but yes, one option is do nothing and accept it will need replacing in ? Years!

The map. It was about £150 so I'd prefer to keep it looking nice for a good few years if possible. We have lots of curvy walls or walls with cupboards on so I can't move the map anywhere else

I’d rather get rid of the map than obscure that beautiful view

Just2MoreSeasons · 20/04/2023 13:27

Actually now I've thought about it the map came with the frame but it's possible to order it without the frame for just £40 so you're both right, I can just do that in a few years if it's damaged. Thankyou!!

You can get ultraviolet window film (cut it to the size of the panes and it self-clings to the glass) but as PPs have said, it might be cheaper and easier to replace the map if it fades.

This. The green-eyed monster reared up at that view.

Whaeanui · 20/04/2023 14:22

Ah you’ve found a good solution. I was going to say you can get special glass for artwork but it’s not covered in glass so that wouldn’t have worked. Nice view!

smooththecat · 20/04/2023 14:30

Get to a glazer or proper framer and ask for anti UV glass. Or check if you already have it. Even so, art hung in direct sunlight will fade.

smooththecat · 20/04/2023 14:46

There’s also clear anti uv film for the window fyi.

smooththecat · 20/04/2023 14:47

Sorry, didn’t read it has no glass. The window film would work though, it’s invisible.

Buy it now and put it away in case it is discontinued!

Thanks again everyone. Ive prices the transparent uv window cling - it's about £20. So I think I'll just order another one - good idea LCB.
