Looking for a picture to go on a plain white wall above my bed. I have a grey/pinky sort of theme and on the wall opposite is a Steven brown canvas or rainbow colours with trees.

I think I a would be buying a canvas and the stuff to paint it myself. That’s a lot of money for a print.

LibertyLily · 02/05/2023 12:19

It's too twee/predictable for my tastes and agree it's something I'd associate with a young child's room....but as everyone else has said, you're the one who has to live with it, so if you love it....

However, the fact that you need reassurance from a bunch of strangers indicates you're not 100% certain or confident in your choice. I'd know immediately if I loved or hated (or just felt 'meh') about a piece of art.

If you want something colourful with hearts/tree(s), I'd definitely consider painting something myself - have done this lots of times when I couldn't find exactly what I wanted or else couldn't afford what I liked.

Otherwise, there's loads of original art on ebay, etsy or at auction houses (try The Saleroom), as well as galleries/exhibitions of local artists' work.

For other options try PrintClub London (not that you asked).

Lots of original art in different styles. Price of frames pretty high but some are in standard sizes that fit ikea-type frames.

Dahlietta · 02/05/2023 12:36

I agree - we’ve picked up some lovely pictures for less than £185 at local art fairs! Have a look around, or for a small gallery.

Whatevergetsyouthroughthenight · 02/05/2023 12:45

If you are asking a bunch of strangers I suspect you have doubts about it yourself, in which case keep looking until you find something you love.

Lamelie · 02/05/2023 12:45

Art is subjective. I love the picture @FabFitFifties posted upthread.
Honestly OP you could find something better for 10% of the price by going into a charity shop or scrolling through your phone and getting something printed onto canvas from Photobox or snappy fish.

BellatrixLestrangesHeatedCurlers · 02/05/2023 13:27

this is totally subjective (I don't like it) but it's your house

Junosui · 02/05/2023 13:40

A friend is an artist with a not-completely-dissimilar style to this (but less whimsy). She sells through Whistlefish as well as local galleries.

Try Whistlefish anyway - there's lots of indie artists worth looking at.

Junosui · 02/05/2023 13:49

...sorry, you asked what posters think of the picture. I find it really anodyne and devoid of anything interesting whatsoever, to be honest. It says nothing to me and makes me feel nothing. I wouldn't give it a second glance, or anything like it. It's one of the ready salted crisp/skinnyjean-and-Converse of artworks. Safe, inoffensive, won't scare the horses.

But that's because I like completely different things - not because the painting is terrible. Art IS completely subjective. ALWAYS buy what YOU love and don't take any notice of me or anyone else Grin

It looks like it would go well with a live laugh love sign.

Exactly this...bit b&m for my liking. But it's your house.

gettingolderbutcooler · 02/05/2023 14:21

Schmaltzy, twee and old fashioned.

Seeingadistance · 02/05/2023 14:28

It will go with the Steven Brown print on the opposite wall. That's the best I can say about both, but it's your bedroom, and if they make you happy then that's fine.

Ouch, harsh........but so honest it made me laugh😂

MrsMitford3 · 02/05/2023 16:12

Oh dear-it's not for me @teaandtoastwithmarmite it looks like something bought in a job lot and used to decorate hotel rooms.

artimesiasfootsteps · 02/05/2023 17:44

I’m an artist and to be blunt but it’s awful. For that price you could go to an art school exhibition (like RCA, City and Guilds, Slade etc and invest in something one off, original and by a trained painter. (Just ring and ask when their exhibition calendar is. The interim shows are cheaper as they haven’t graduated yet).

PollyAmour · 02/05/2023 18:05

I would be inclined to spend that kind of money on something original and not just because it matches the decor.

MysteryBelle · 02/05/2023 18:10

Yes I like it. Uplifting and I like the colors, nice for a bedroom. I for one do not like the grim artwork people seem to lean toward.

What sort of grim artwork do you mean 😂

Alwayswonderedwhy · 02/05/2023 19:29

It looks like generic hotel room/doctors waiting room type thing.

For that price you could get an original screen print from a artist or similar.

CantSell · 02/05/2023 19:34

It’s awful - in my opinion - but it doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks. The art you hang on your bedroom wall is for you, unless you’re planning on doing some OnlyFans shoots aimed at art aficionados.

MysteryBelle · 02/05/2023 19:38

Bimbom · 02/05/2023 19:11

What I was thinking of is that nude painting posted on mn recently that the op’s dh’s ex put in her house and op’s children had to see it all the time. I can’t think of the name of the artist, but it was a crude sexual picture that was just grim, it was not something I’d want looking back at me from my wall 😂

MysteryBelle · 02/05/2023 19:40

It was like a combination of a badly done Picasso and a Freddy Krueger in drag except unclothed, with a come hither look.

Grotesque 😳

WillowtreeHouse · 02/05/2023 19:42

Oh hark at all the art experts on here giving their snippy 'if you like mass produced' type comments. They will of course only entertain a genuine Monet and original pieces sourced from local galleries and painted with the tears of angels, in their homes. 😂

MysteryBelle · 02/05/2023 19:44

So yes, give me the painting of sweet hearts in a tree. I appreciate fine art but I can also appreciate pretty and calming pictures that at least have an uplifting idea anchoring it.

MysteryBelle · 02/05/2023 19:46

I love art and at the same time I own a set of folk art pictures of the four seasons mass produced that I bought at Walmart when I had my first apartment. I have nice paintings and watercolors now but I love those prints to this day and not just for sentimental reasons.
