These are the stairs - in my living room. Would it annoy you or not bother you?

It wouldn't be a deal breaker

bubbles2023 · 21/03/2023 18:38

If I had a choice id never buy a house with stairs in the living room.

EstherHazy · 21/03/2023 18:45

I wouldn't mind it - I looked at plenty of houses like it. I would actually prefer it to tightly boxed in stairs. But I've never lived in one like that and hadn't factored in the heat going up, which now I know from all these comments!

Xarrie · 21/03/2023 18:46

It would put me off a bit tbh.

Custardbanana · 21/03/2023 18:49

I've been in rented for the past 10 years that has stairs off the living room and it's just too cold. All the heat escapes and we end up spending the winter upstairs. I'm actively looking for houses with stairs off the hallway instead.

NCTDN · 21/03/2023 18:49

I like it. I can't stand dark hallways.
But you already own this house?

Youdoyoubabe · 21/03/2023 18:51

I wouldn't mind it. I suppose you could box them in and then have a window to cast light into them.

LadyFlumpalot · 21/03/2023 18:52

Stairs in the living room and front doors that open straight into the living room are my two biggest nopes when house hunting. No particular reason for the stairs one, I just don't like it. So yes, it would put me off.

BabyMomma2021 · 21/03/2023 19:34

I always wanted a house like this because it seems like it would magical on Christmas morning, sneaking down to see the Christmas presents under the tree...

But that's probably not the best reason to say yes ☺️

I don’t like it personally and it would put me off

MysteryBelle · 21/03/2023 19:35

Only if someone were coming down the stairs on all fours, then yes it would put me off the house.

parietal · 21/03/2023 19:40

i'd move the sofa at the base of the stairs forward by 3ft and put a glass wall or rom divider behind the sofa (like the picture) so there is effectively a corridor around the back corner of the room and you don't see the stairs so much. it would also make the room feel cosier.

Would this put you off a house?
comingoutofmycageandillbedoingjustfine · 21/03/2023 20:57

I wouldn't if I had a choice. I much prefer a stair case having their own walls or to be in a hallway.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 21/03/2023 21:01

It would put me off,
cooking smells and noise going upstairs, also I would worry about a fire spreading.
if it was the only negative I would just have them boxed in and put a sun tunnel in the landing or something.

EspeciallyDedicated · 21/03/2023 21:08

Sun tunnel is a good idea. Ours are boxed in, but the walls are white, the lighting is bright and there is a window opposite the top of the stairs so they don’t feel dark and gloomy at all.

Branleuse · 21/03/2023 21:09

Doesnt bother me

allswellthatends · 21/03/2023 21:13

To me it's better any day than the usual layout in terraces where you open your front door and the first thing you see is the stairs. If it's noisy for upstairs, you can put a door at the top of the stairs without too much expense, as we did.

Rockbird · 21/03/2023 21:24

Wouldn't bother me at all. My stairs are closed in and dark and there's no way to open them up. If I could I'd do it in a heartbeat.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 21/03/2023 22:56

It depends how much the sound carries.

I lived somewhere similar at uni, but the whole house was laminate flooring so it just echoed. You've lots of soft furnishings so I expect it's fine.

dinkydonky · 22/03/2023 10:33

Depends on the overall layout of the house tbh. I'm often not a fan, but our house has stairs in the living room and it doesn't bother me at all. Our living room is really warm (big radiators and a wood burner) and our floors are really thin anyway so I don't think it makes much difference for us noise-wise.

I would probably try to arrange the room differently so the sofa didn't back onto the stairs though

MrsSkylerWhite · 22/03/2023 10:34

Yes, sorry, would put me off but that’s because I have a weird thing about sitting with my back to stairs.

spiderplantparty · 22/03/2023 16:07

I grew up in a house like that and it was magical on Christmas day but generally speaking the downstairs was very cold. I like the idea a pp had of putting in a glass partition, perhaps with a door at the bottom.

Daffodilfrog · 22/03/2023 16:18

I had a house like that pre children which I then found hard to sell on . It could be noisy and was otherwise a family house . There were other issues such as a small garden though

NCTDN · 22/03/2023 20:29

I like the idea of a door at the top of the stairs instead.
