Mattress Leaning Against the Wall

Long story short, my new home office is going to have to have a mattress leaning against the wall (to be placed on folding bed-frame when we have guests). It's not ideal, but we can't afford anything different at the moment for our office/spare room set up.

How can I style my home office space so that I do not feel like I'm in a store room with a mattress against the wall? Even if I had the budget for a giant wardrobe to store the mattress in, there wouldn't be room for it, so it needs to be a budget option that takes up no space. DH suggested 'putting some fabric over it' but I think that will look even worse!!

The only thing I can think of is hanging curtains in front of it.

I have a similar system in my sewing room for some un tidy narrowish shelves along one wall.

The curtain rail is fixed to the ceiling.

Could you not get a sofa bed instead? Then you have somewhere to sit/ relax

We have my parents to stay regularly and my mum suffers with a bad back, so we really need a solution that keeps the current (very expensive and comfortable!) mattress for her.

What about a room divider/screen? We have one that sits behind my husband when he works so the rest of the living room isn't on show.

The cheaper ones are around the £50 range but you can get some really lovely decorative ones if you could stretch a bit higher.

This is the one we have and it's fine Amazon Room Divider

Single, double, king size?

Double!

We have a super king bed and store our double mattress under that. Would that be an option for you?

Sprig1 · 14/03/2023 12:38

How about setting up a pulley system so that you can hang it from the ceiling?

MotherOfHouseplants · 14/03/2023 12:39

Whatever you use will need to allow air to circulate around it so that you don't get mould. Would you have space for something like an Ikea Kallax to sit in front of it?

SaltanVinegar · 14/03/2023 12:40

A decent room divider will hide it well, I got one from Wayfair. It’s solid wood and weighs a tonne, so not one of the flimsy ones that fall over all the time.

Actually we do have a Kallax that could go in there. It's a 4 x 4 one and probably a bit too short to hide the mattress, but I'm sure I could buy another 4 x 1 one to stack on top of it. We'd have to push it back against the wall to actually put the folding bed up, but I think it would just about fit.

You can get kits to fasten stacked Kallaxes.

sixfoot · 14/03/2023 13:51

Can you put it under your bed when not in use? I would really hate a mattress up against the wall too , I understand why you don’t want that!

WindUpPenguin · 14/03/2023 14:48

I will get DH to see whether it will go under our bed. My instinct is that it would technically fit, but I am not sure there is the room to actually angle it to get it under there... It is also very heavy, so having it in an awkward place in another room is not ideal.

I was thinking you might be able to buy a huge bedspread that looked like rows of books? I've seen wallpaper like this.
Maybe there is fabric and you can get it hemed?

Marmighty · 16/03/2023 08:56

Get a high quality sofa bed, and when your mum comes she sleeps in your bed and you and DH sleep on the sofa bed

GoldenGorilla · 16/03/2023 09:10

Get some shelves on wheels so you can put those in front of the mattress but then move them out of the way easily?
