Yellow sofa

I am after some advice as my interior design and matching skills are sadly very limited.
I am looking to buy a sofa for our cream lounge and wondered whether rather than getting a cream sofa, having a pop of colour would brighten the room. I love the idea of yellow but have almond white on the walls and a cream carpet and cannot envision what this will look like. I am worried it will all be too clashing in nature. Happy for any suggestions for non cream sofas that may complement the already existing colour scheme.
There is a chimney breast wall which we could paint similar to the sofa colour too if it brings it together.

Personally I wouldn't put yellow with cream, I would go for a red or a vibrant blue. Easier to put a complementary colour on the wall which is a great idea.

I like this blue sofa it's a ver vibrant colour but looks great with the creams and off whites around it I think , it's from DFS

Thank you I hadn’t thought about blue and it does really fit in well. I am going to have a look at that now

The blue is nice.

I think if you want to experiment with colour, adding a splash of colour with the paint would be better as easier and cheaper to change if you don't like it or change your mind.

Thank you that’s also a good idea and one less likely to cause significant regret I think. Especially when I’m not sure of what I am doing with colour! W

I’ve gone for a warm neutral colour on the walls (Portland Stone) and kind of cream sofa.

I change it up every six months with my accessories. So I’ve got warm red/checks for curtains, cushions, throws in the winter. Then duck-egg blue for the spring/summer. It’s a bit more outlay in the beginning, buying both sets, but it means I get to switch to a new look easily for the seasons.

My curtains, etc are from Next, George at Asda. I’m not made of money!

There’s a lot of rust coloured sofas around at the moment which could be lovely.

I’d choose something that isn’t a million years away from a neutral, ie muted rather than super bright. We have just ordered an ochre sofa, it’s sort of yellow but also quite browny, so adds colour but is not in your face. Hope we like it when it arrives 😬

I have a yellow sofa which I love, but can't see it going with cream walls.

I agree. I'd put a yellow or orange sofa with dark walls . I'd put a plush blue / deep green/ red with the cream.

I have a blue sofa and a yellow armchair, i'll change them eventually but we had them when we moved in. The reason to change is more size and shape than colour- I think both look fine with our cream walls (Crown 'Old English' I think). People always comment on how much they like the teal/ blue. Excuse all the toys and bad lighting!

Agree with the PP who said yellow would be good with darker walls. I think @Jezzballs2000 sittingroom works because of the contrast with the blue sofa.

Of course it depends on the yellow as well. A bright sunshine yellow won't work with cream but a more muted straw yellow with some dark wood in the room might.

Jezzballs2000 · 19/03/2023 07:41

@JaninaDuszejko i think you're right, it might be a bit much with a whole yellow set. I think blue is a good idea, it's very forgiving of dirt and grime (I speak from experience).

Thank you for sharing this it’s so helpful to see it in practice. It looks great and I think blue is the way to go based on these responses.

i hadn’t thought about red. That’s certainly something to consider. Thank you

Thanks to everyone it’s been so helpful. I’m useless with colour and so this has really helped me to focus on what would work. Blue or red are front runners or failing that I like the suggestion of a cream sofa with bright accents.

@HulahoopsBBQbeef I think blue would be good, but @Jezzballs2000 's gold/mustard looks fab, I'd stay away from light or sunshine bright yellow. There are some other lovely colours around too at the moment.

i presume that as you're talking about painting the Chimney Breast, you own the house or have a LL that doesn't mind you painting?! So if you don't like the colours together you can change the paint colour anyway.

Timetochangetheoil · 19/03/2023 11:54

Blue was my first thought. I love a bright teal sofa.

Also love your spotty rug @Jezzballs2000

Africa2go · 21/03/2023 17:50

Oh I can help Smile

I have a bright yellow sofa (a bit like this, actually a bit brighter) but have it against blue walls, again similar to the picture.

In a separate room, we have a dark teal sofa against neutral walls which I think goes very well.

I know sofas are more expensive than paint / accessories but we've had the yellow sofa for about 3 years now and I still absolutely love it. I had to talk myself into being "brave" enough to go bold - have always played it safe before - but honestly so glad i did!
