If you have a bay window...

Which of the following do you have?!

  • blinds on 3 windows
  • pole going across the top of the window on the outside of the recess
  • pole inside the recess going around the bay

I'm leaning towards option b. Maybe build a window seat, or put a piece of furniture there that will end up behind the curtains!

We have 7 panes and have a brushed stainless steel bendy metal track attached to the ceiling above the bay. I really wanted Roman blinds but didn't want all the associated workings for 7 blinds.

BeeBB · 03/03/2023 19:44

We have neutral coloured (ivory/cream) roman blinds on three windows, no curtains 1930’s semi had it that way for years and not in a hurry to change it. Some younger trendier neighbours have some shutters which also look good.

My SIL has a large bay window in a modern large dorma bungalow and her partner put some new curtain poles up which I think went right around or they maybe got a fitting adapter kit. They purchased it at Dunlem. They have three blinds and three lots of curtains but the pole looks continuous if that makes sense.

Meandfour · 03/03/2023 19:45

Shutters on 3 sides and then a pole across the front with curtains. They never get closed though.

DidyouNO · 03/03/2023 19:53

We just have blinds on ours but the window drop is 3 meters so off the peg curtains wouldn't fit anyway and made to measure would cost thousands.

Blinds on 3 windows.

Quitelikeacatslife · 03/03/2023 20:00

Bendy track in bay and pinch pleat curtains

Curtain tracks all around inside of bay window, pencil pleat curtains.

This is what we have for our bay windows too

crew2022 · 03/03/2023 20:12

Blinds in all 3. We have a lovely view and I wanted blinds that fully clear the windows when not in use

Gooseysgirl · 03/03/2023 20:15

We have slatted blinds on the three and a curtain track that DH fitted with thermal curtains. We remove the curtains during the summer, but need them in the winter to keep the heating in.

sealon82 · 03/03/2023 20:19

Curtain track fitted to the shape of the bay.

pizzalavita · 03/03/2023 20:20

Just ordered shutters for our bay

@crew2022

can you please tell me a bit more about your blinds. I need some that completely clear the window(s)

I can't find anything I like. Romans just seem to have too much depth. I don't really want roller as the window(s) are really wide with (outward) opening windows either side and a top one.

(White) wooden blind is very deep (takes away too much ligh)

maybe I need a different shutter company. A couple came out,but they were plastic and just looked so cheap (even though they weren't. Though I think the nature of them would block too much light.

thanks.

We have option 3. Dunelm do a bay pole you bend to fit. It’s excellent and about £70. Easy to fit

Im trying to build up the courage to fit one of these, but a lot of reviews say it’s very hard to bend.

allthegearandnoideaatall · 03/03/2023 20:25

1 and recently added 3 for warmth. 5 blinds on each window cost around £400 per window. I
bought a pole from eBay and made curtains myself from an old pair.

5 sided bay windows, North facing and both downstairs and upstairs.

allthegearandnoideaatall · 03/03/2023 20:27

This is the pole kit I bought.

@WinterMusings
They are roller blinds (electric so no cords hanging) with a matching pelmet to hide the roll.
They completely clear the window and allow the two big windows either side to open and the small top windows.
I looked at shutters but with a big bay window they could fold flat against the wall either side

familyissues12345 · 03/03/2023 20:32

We have blinds, only moved in beginning of Jan. Plan to get shutters at some point

tangeriiinedrream · 03/03/2023 20:33

I have a square bay

We have individual blinds on the three windows, then a curtain pole across the wall with curtains that are more for show

lashy · 03/03/2023 20:41

Recently moved out of a lovely double fronted house with a large bay window either side of the front door, both windows were dressed the same:-
Roller blind on each sash (3 in total) and curtains on a pole which sat outside the window recess (no hold backs - curtains were really full and just say touched the floor). Loved it.

Wotcha23 · 03/03/2023 21:08

We found it really easy, honestly.

Wotcha23 · 03/03/2023 21:09

That was to MissyB1 sorry.

@crew2022

thank you for that, I'll have a look online tomorrow.

would you recommend the company you bought yours from?

RidingMyBike · 03/03/2023 22:34

1 and 3
We have some that are five and some that are three window bays. Have vertical blinds at all of them partly for privacy, partly to keep sun out of room in summer. Partly as an extra layer of insulation in colder weather. Then we have made to measure bendable curtain track shaped for each window with thick curtains, that's for at night and to help keep heat in.

Anniissa · 03/03/2023 22:40

We have individual poles across the three sides - 2 smaller and one larger across the middle with single curtains in the sides and double on the middle.

Aposterhasnoname · 03/03/2023 22:48

We have 5 windows in our bay, blinds on each window and a metal curtain pole that goes round the recess.
