If you have a bay window...

Which of the following do you have?!

  • blinds on 3 windows
  • pole going across the top of the window on the outside of the recess
  • pole inside the recess going around the bay

I'm leaning towards option b. Maybe build a window seat, or put a piece of furniture there that will end up behind the curtains!

Curtain tracks all around inside of bay window, pencil pleat curtains.

Clicheinaqashqai · 03/03/2023 18:22

Square Bay, 3 roman blinds. 1 side one stays shut most of the time as it stops next door seeing in so much.

We considered B, but didn't like that they would stop us putting furniture against the walls either side and wouldn't close nicely around the armchair.

DuvetDownn · 03/03/2023 18:23

1 and 3

Clymene · 03/03/2023 18:24

A track that goes round the bay. Our TV lives in the bay and the room would be v small without that.

Starlighttwinkle · 03/03/2023 18:25

We have ‘perfect fit’ blinds on the bay window, they look great

troppibambini6 · 03/03/2023 18:26

Here's mine. We have a pretty big drive and gates so no one can see in so we very rarely draw the curtains.

Option 3.

There's no lintel across the top of our bay, so option 2 isn't possible.

I've toyed with the idea if blinds/ shutters, especially on the bottom half of the sash windows, but I don't think it's necessary. It's a north-facing room, so we've made sure the curtain rail continues 15cm-ish beyond the end of the window so that the hanging curtains block minimal light during the day time.

overmydeadbody · 03/03/2023 18:27

Shutters here, same as most of the neighbours too. I'd highly recommend them.

Fleur405 · 03/03/2023 18:27

We have option (a) - three blinds. I think option (b) would look really odd. Though we do have quite a large bay window.

hettiethehare · 03/03/2023 18:29

In our old place we had a made to measure wrought iron pole around the bay and made to measure floor length curtains - cost us a bloody fortune at the time, but (a) looked amazing and (b) prevented me divorcing DH when he would have inevitably fucked up measuring for the bay pole after claiming he could manage it fine.

Now in our new place and we're going to get half shutters for privacy and then probably curtains similar to our old place when we can afford them as I prefer curtains on windows.

That looks gorgeous! The bay I have is smaller and more traditionally bay window shaped. I'm just not sure what looks the best.

Flexible track, I like the natural light so wouldn’t want blinds and as mines a round bay or square a pole wouldn’t work either.

Shutters are actually an idea, as the house is on a road that has 2 schools on it, so fairly busy.

We have option 3. Dunelm do a bay pole you bend to fit. It’s excellent and about £70. Easy to fit

WellTidy · 03/03/2023 18:35

Tracking inside the recess. We have gldove windows though, a deep sill and the radiator under the sill. Then curtains down to sitting on the sill. I needed to keep the radiator heating the room as the room is large-ish with a high ceiling.

SwimmingAgainstTheTides · 03/03/2023 18:39

I have net curtains and curtains on tracks that goes around the bay, curtains sit just on the windowsill otherwise the heat from radiator below just goes up behind curtains and doesn't heat the room.
Not a fan of blinds, and l live on quite a busy street, close to a school so l like my privacy.

hourbyhour101 · 03/03/2023 18:43

Anyone know any good places to get seat cushions with covers for a bay window ? Ours is trapizode shape and I can only find ones on Etsy and it's driving me mad (I had a bad experience with Etsy so loathed to use it again)

Op sorry for bombing your op.

I have blinds and then a curtain rail that my partner made. Made by screwing wood to ceiling and using one of those bendy curtain tracks works for us but our bay window is a bloody nightmare and I know no one else with one !

cptartapp · 03/03/2023 19:01

Four large bay windows. All with blinds. It's where the Christmas tree sits so didn't want to shut it off.

DuvetDownn · 03/03/2023 19:09

We also have the bendable pole mentioned earlier.

NotMeNoNo · 03/03/2023 19:20

Ceiling track that follows the 5 panels so the curtains (insulated) open clear to the sides. No space for pole.
Still have the cheap nets from moving in but plan to get a set of wooden Venetian blinds.

Depends if it's a tall 1900s bay or a wide 1930s one.

Pythonesque · 03/03/2023 19:28

Wide (wrt the room) rectangular bay here, radiator in it so don't want floor length curtains in front although they would otherwise work well. (I'd love to have a window seat instead of the radiator to be honest, but would involve completely rethinking the room so not going to happen!).

We have a wooden pelmet and fitted a bendy track behind it thinking it would look better than the curved track in front of it that was there when we moved in. And yes, it does look better, but functionally we can't move the curtains properly so the sides of the bay are permanently curtained. My intention (for a few years ...) has been to look at taking the pelmet down altogether and getting a better track fitted. We do have fairly wide window ledges there and that does mean the short curtains look good.

Led9519 · 03/03/2023 19:34

Shutters and curtain track going inside the bay.

Bow window with a curved pole I made by spray painting some plastic piping! 😂 Works for me.

Blinds on all 3 windows, then a pole across the top with curtains that don't get closed - just for show. They help block the light when the blinds are closed on the 2 small windows.

Me too. The curtains are never closed

fiorentina · 03/03/2023 19:42

We have shutters too on our square bay. Looks cleaner and is warm.
