Low cost lounge revamp

I hate my lounge. It's got a vile brown carpet and brown sofas which are super comfy but 15 years old and a bit tatty
I've looked at offcits for carpet and we can get one in our room size pretty cheaply. We d got nice blimey grey walls and dark wood furniture. My kids would like a grey and white sleek, modern box but it's not the house or our style but there must be a half way house.
I'm considering:

  • new rug
  • off cut carpet (what colour with blue grey walls?) and if we can't cover sofas
-sofas - this is the biggie. I might be able to get new ones with a bonus in the summer but for now they stay as they are. Has anyone tried the stretchy covers you can buy ? I imagine they're not great but would help pull a new room together. I have a tv unit I love as a cupboard but not as a tv unit so need a new one of those too I like my plain ish fireplace and log burner isn't going anywhere. Oh and we've also got a big brown leather armchair. It's like a junk shop. I don't know where to start. Colour palettes around brown don't float my boat but I may be stuck with sofas s while. Can't get Greg carpet and brown sofas can I ? I'm useless at this stuff unless starting from scratch.

Have you got a photo of the room as it is currently?

I'm worried about outing myself but can try snippets rather than full room.

I’d go cream or pale beige carpet or rug.

how big is the room and what’s your budget , you can get rugs quite cheaply at IKEA.

I suspect the issue is the colour…

Stinkypup · 26/02/2023 18:57

Here's the soda half covered by the navy velvety throws we have on but unwrapped so you can see the brown. The rug isn't great either. We struggled to get one to sit on the carpet without rucking though I've got the one attached too we can try again with on new carpet
Yellow cube isn't great either but I could recover Brown, blue mustard. It's all vile !

Colour is what I hate. It's gloomy and just looks really crap. Though it was good quality when we out it down and the less worn bits feel lovely still, it's just ....meh
The issue of a pale one and asking kids to take shoes off is another matter which is why we went dark but I'd have to be strict if going paler. Are people still getting grey ?

If you can cope with a little work you can fabric dye the sofas

Treetopviews · 26/02/2023 19:06

I’d not do grey op.

rwalker · 26/02/2023 19:09

Wall and paint work brilliant white everything white
then orange curtains , cushions and ornaments things

rwalker · 26/02/2023 19:09

If you can’t change it work with it and embrace it

trickyex · 27/02/2023 19:26

Can I recommend a large IKEA rug to start, this would brighten up the room and you could go from there.

COuld we see a full pic of the sofas? Might be easier to leave those and cheer them up with lighter cushions. Ideally the curtains too in full view.
Or look at sofas from Gumtree/FB etc, much cheaper than new.

trickyex · 27/02/2023 19:31

If you go for a beige rug and keep the sofas you could add earthy coloured cushions in linen and velvet, look here for some great options.
Cant really see the curtains well from your pic so hard to tell.
Move the grey rug and navy throws elsewhere.
Add some table lamps with warm shades and it will feel cosier.
