Sanding and painting

I want to tackle our skirting boards / doors and frames. They look like the attached photos. How closely would the non flat bits need to be sanded to key the paint?

I was going to get a small hand sander for the flat bits of the doors and the main part of the skirts but assume it won't work on the carved bits?

You could use sandpaper 120 grit, or sanding sponges to key the curved areas.

Make sure any flaking has been removed with a scraper... and then fill any cracks/joints with painters

As PP has said, normal sandpaper will get into the curves. You need to get the flakes off and also get "under" the gloss shine. If you don't then it will just peel off eventually.

Thanks. There's not really any flaking (I think??). It's eggshell not gloss paint - does that make a difference?

You don’t really need to take masses of material off to provide a good key, I’d happily sand/rub back the flat bits by hand too as I find using a machine kicks up much more dust.

Just fold the sandpaper so get it into the tighter narrow bits, once the paper becomes clogged, unfold it and use a different part of the paper. Those look in pretty good Nick tbh compared to some I’ve dealt with. Perhaps a bit of caulk on top of the skirting as the join looks a bit cracked in one pic.

I'd just go for a light sanding and then a good wash down with sugar soap.

I’d focus on sanding off the flakes/chips between the skirting and the wall (last photo) and then filling it with a caulking gun. I’d then just use a good primer/undercoat on the rest of the woodwork and then paint. CBA with sanding!

Paint before caulk, though.
