Really want oak skirting but can't afford it, but considering pine stained and oiled but everyone thinks it will look awful. Trying to avoid having to paint in future.

you could buy a length (or ask local diy place if there’s an offcut) and try it out. That way you will know for sure if it will be lovely -so you can do it, or awful -so you save the cost of doing it all. It’s a small outlay and will save you wondering or making a costly mistake.

It will look fine, just select lengths with the fewest knots in them as pine is generally more knotty than oak. Then stain them all at once in a garage or outside on a nice day. After that’s all done, then install them in the rooms.

Don’t install and then try to stain.

You shouldn’t need to oil them after staining. Just keep them dusted.

We had to stain and oil the pine bits on the inside of the door frames where we have new oak doors. It's not fantastic I have to say and doesn't really look like the oak.

Did you know too that you can mix stains like paint to get a perfect match with any oak you might already have?
