Painting ikea kallax

Hi, I wonder if anyone out there has successfully painted ikea kallax units? And if so, what paint did you use? They’re not real wood of course so I can’t sand them but I’m wondering if normal wood paint will work or if I need to treat or prime them first or anything like that?
thanks in advance

You should give it a light sand and then prime it before painting it. Zinsser Bulls Eye or 123 primers are usually recommended.

That’s great, thanks!

Definitely the Zinsser primer. It's the red and white tin. Works perfectly.

I was Googling this earlier today! Good article here aboderie.co.uk/blog/diy-ikea-kallax-hack-how-to-paint-laminate-cabinets-so-they-actually-last

Recommends Dulux difficult surfaces primer so I may give that a go

Not kallax but I painted my ikea pax wardrobe with Valspar furniture paint, 2 coats, no primer, no sanding, no waxing. It’s so easy, first coat looks awful, 2nd coat looks great!

Use Frenchic as it has a self primer.
Once you've tried it you'll wonder why you've not used it before!

Also use a foam roller as opposed to a fluffy one or a brush, it's so much smoother!!
