Cat-proof stair runner

Hi, we want to recarpet our stairs with ‘runner’ style carpet but have a cat that scratches any thing and everything. We’ve been told that looped carpet is a no-no with cats but all stair runners seem to be this type (and tufted carpet really doesn’t look right when used in this way) - has anyone found a sisal type carpet that cats can’t get their claws into? Or should I give up on this idea? Thanks!

We have a flatweave runner on our stairs, and our cat doesn’t go for it - she is a carpet/rug scratcher usually but this one is quite tight and she can’t really get her claws in. The downside is that because it’s so flat it is also a bit slippy so you do need to take care in smooth soled slippers. Ours is a herringbone weave but I imagine any flatweave would work as long as it is very flat iyswim.

Wish I knew the answer. Luckily our cat only ever scratches the very bottom step so I keep a lump of spare carpet in a cupboard and every couple of years I replace the bottom step with a fresh bit of carpet
