What would you do with scuffed varnished floors?

We had them sanded and varnished 20 years ago. Don't want to have them sanded again as I worry they will be too thin. I have revarnished over the years but they get a lot of use and scuff really easily, some of the bits now without varnish look a bit grubby despite occasional washing. We have a big family and lots of animals so decent replacements would also get scuffed.

Is there anything I can put over the top of make them look better, cover up the unvarnished bits etc?

Can you buff them to remove the varnish, and apply an oil? I haven't done my floorboards yet, but I'm looking into it now and opting for oil as its meant to be a lot easier to touch up parts in the future

I have a similar problem to OP. How do you buff the old varnish off?
