Worn oak table help

I purchased an oak table with 8 chairs from FB marketplace. It’s looking very worn in places with quite a few pinhole marks all over. Previous owners stated they didn’t know of any woodworm problems.

Any idea how I can make it look better? Would painting it be a big no no?! I would prefer it to be less orange looking.

You could sand it down & wax it, or sand & paint I’m not sure how you check out if woodworm was or is present though unfortunately.

Thanks for your reply. Wish I never bought the thing now!

Just treat it for woodworm. I do that with all antique/old furniture I buy. It’s cheap and easy to do.

You can fill holes with wood putty. Then sand. Then paint or stain.
