How can I hang curtains here?

I'd love to replace the blinds in these windows with curtains* but there is no wall clearance above the window to run a track or pole.

Can i fix a track to the ceiling and if so any suggestions of where to get the track from?

Thanks!

*(ideally a voile and a blackout)

You can get ceiling tracks. Ours was from john lewis.

Can you not fix in the space at the top of the window? (On either side)

bestbefore · 28/01/2023 09:15

Get a pole and fix brackets to ceiling

What about something like this from
Amazon? Other places might sell them too, they work like a shower curtain pole

Look at curtain pole recess brackets.
I've just bought a few sets as have a few windows with the same problem.

Chasingsquirrels · 28/01/2023 09:18

How does the window open and would any fixings affect that?

Newlifestartingatlast · 28/01/2023 09:21

Personally I’d fix a curtain rail to the wall on either side of the inset. If you hang curtains inside against the window you will loose a lot of light when drawn back. The inset will also appear narrower. Hanging on outside means toy can draw the curtains back to either side, and just have middle edge of curtain overhand the inset by 0.5 cm when drawn back giving the illusion of a wider window and ensuring all light gets through.

Sorry should have said - the window opens 2 ways, either hinged at the bottom of the pane or, infrequently i open it fully on the side hinge like a book.

Am reluctant to put the track or a pole within the recess as it would mean a big chunk of the window still covered when i draw the curtains open.

Here's a better view! With both windows open in the way I use most often.

@Newlifestartingatlast do you mean a pole?

Ah, I've got a tall window which opens like that - recently fitted.
I had a curtain in the gap on a push-fit rod previously (old window was fixed glass bottom half and normal outwards opening window top half).
It wasn't until after the new window was fitted that I realised I couldn't open it with the rod in place.

Looking at your 2nd picture, what about curtains running the full length of the wall, pushed back 1 to each side when open?
Depends what else is on the wall.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 28/01/2023 09:59

Have the fixings outside of the recess so that the curtains can be pulled right back. It might affect the book style opening of the window though.

Chasingsquirrels · 28/01/2023 10:00

I think you'd have to mount the track on the ceiling to still be able to open the windows like books though?

bussteward · 28/01/2023 10:08

What about a portiere rod? They’re used for door curtains: hinged at one side so the pole folds back.

Whataretheodds · 28/01/2023 17:21

Thanks all.

I think I'll have to sacrifice the book opening unless i can find something like a portière (new word for me!)

I'm leaning towards a track on the ceiling with the curtains drawn into the middle (against the wall on the right is a chest of drawers / make up mirror), then a side-on wardrobe so can't really do a tension rod the whole length of the room.

Portiere here.

@Newlifestartingatlast do you mean a pole?

Yes

I’ve recently ordered Roman blinds which can be hung from the ceiling too. They would block light though and you’d have to think about the windows opening onwards.
