I cannot choose a floor tile, help!

I have a small area of hallway just inside my front door approx 1 meter square. It's a lovely old stone cottage from 1856. My taste is something like contemporary country/Scandi/mid century/vintage. I absolutely love tiles but the wealth of choice is completely paralysing me! I definitely want a pattern. We have dogs - should I only be looking at dark-coloured tiles, will I be forever wiping them down otherwise? Colours I like are blues, yellows, teals. Are those slightly distressed star pattern tiles done to death? Help!

For the age of the cottage and the area you need to cover, I'd just go for quarry tiles in a chequerboard design. Either black and red or black and white. And, yes, I think those star ones are overdone but if you like them, have them. It's a small enough area that you can redo it one day if you go off them.

I don’t care about done to death personally. The star ones are lovely and from what you describe, in keeping with your home

Fullsomefrenchie · 19/01/2023 19:14

Quarry tiles are quite unattractive really unless original.

id go for something quite stand out, but avoid black or white, past that don’t worry f anything has been done to death it’s about what you like.

Both of those tiles on the pics are lovely. They'd never go out of fashion if you were bothered about that:

Both look so nice.

If you mean this kind of star tile I would avoid. There’s a place I visit with these floor tiles and they just look grubby!!

I’d be very tempted to get reclaimed tiles - quite a few online sources.

cushionfiend · 19/01/2023 22:40

@minipie Yes, I know what you mean! You've blown my mind with the mention of reclaimed tiles, I hadn't even considered that - I've already ordered so many samples that I'm not sure my brain can cope but I do rather like the idea. Might hit the local architectural salvage this weekend, apparently they've got over 1600 tiles in stock - eek.

Thanks again to those who responded - we've decided on this one. Simple, elegant, and easier to keep clean. Feels in keeping with our fairly simple wee cottage too.

The Bert and May ones are currently 60% off in the fired earth sale …..

Hardtobelieve123 · 28/01/2023 00:29

I really like your choice! So fresh and with a nod to the past but not stuck there. Well done 😁

cushionfiend · 28/01/2023 09:16

@Girlattheback Thanks very much for the heads up but we definitely want the blue colour and Bert & May only do that in the encaustic version which is way too much hassle.

@Hardtobelieve123 That's such a great description and spot on, love it!
