How would you arrange the room

We are in the midst of an extension on the back of our house and would appreciate some perspective on how others would arrange this room.

The big opening will be French doors to the garden and there will be a low level ceiling to the right and a vaulted ceiling to the left with a roof lantern.

What would you use the room for and how would you arrange it? There will be 2 openings into the room.

We ultimately would like more living space with some flexibility to use as a dining area. Having trouble deciding which the feature wall should be.

Any thoughts at all?

Can you provide a plan rather than the photo - walls windows doors and dimensions ?

Reading nook. Small sofa and big bookshelf so a nice space for additional sitting when main living area is otherwise occupied?

Can you sketch out a floorplan of the ground floor?

Where is the kitchen? What other rooms do you already have?

If this will be the nicest room in the house - and it sounds nice with a view to the garden and lots of light - I would prioritise using it for whatever you like doing best. What does your family do? We play a lot of board games so our games table has the best spot in our house as it gets more use than the sofa.

Regarding the feature wall etc., I do not really like them, but in a new room I would wait a bit before doing much decoration as you need to see what the light is like etc. before choosing.

Could you draw a floor plan of the room with the garden and connecting rooms? It's difficult to visualise from your photo.

Starting suggestion then, extendable table (to give you some flexibility) width ways, small sofa or seats before French doors, TV / fire / books opposite sofa on the wall right angle to the window...

bench seating against the big wall visible in the left of the photo. refectory style dining table in front of that to seat 8 (3 on the bench, the rest on chairs)

make sure the patio doors open so that the first opening is towards the centre of the room (not all the way on the left).

two comfy chairs or a small sofa on the low bit to the right

no feature wall but have lots of picture on the big wall above the dining table.

the floorplan looks very different to the photo. have you changed the windows and doors around?

JamMakingWannaBe · 09/01/2023 22:57

That's quite a big opening from your kitchen. Can you reduce that and have the sofa along the wall in your photo facing the garden?

Dining table turned 90 degrees and put where it says "garden room" on your plan. It seems you are creating extra distance to carry plates as well as blocking access to the doors.

As PP, you want to maximise the view of the garden.

Yes there is a window instead of door to front right and no little window to left
