Living room colour - dark brown

Hello. We are re painting our living room walls. We are in a 1930s house with traditional fire place and floating shelves on the wall where the tele sits. These were put in by prior owner and are good quality wood - they look great. Only thing is they are dark brown wood.

We did think of painting the shelves and fireplace white, but I was wondering if anyone had any wall paint suggestions that would work if we left the fireplace wood and shelves dark.

I like blues and greens?

Personally I'd paint the shelves to give me more options of they are the only dark wood things in the room.

Another option would be to put an nice printed wallpaper behind them.

Brown is very trendy for interiors. A dark chocolate brown.

What colour is your sofa?

DD & SIL love dark furniture and both their houses have had one wall in each room very deep jewel colours - red, green, blue & aubergine with the other walls cream and paintwork white. It looks absolutely stunning

Sofa is neutral but we’d be happy to replace if needed as we have had it a while! I’m hopeless at interiors

We have dark brown wood in the lounge and kitchen and I've used Dulux teal voyage in both as a feature wall. Both rooms have been transformed by doing this and look really classy.

A friend has stained wood shelves, Bancha walls and white woodwork and it looks brilliant if you're brave enough for that!

wood is a neutral so I think most colours go - just make sure you get a shade that works with the specific brown of the wood.

If you like blues and greens I'd be tempted by a sage green. I find blue rooms often feel a bit cold. Or a darker green or blue would be nice if you want something a bit bolder

Thanks everyone.
