What to hang in the alcove?

We're decorating our bedroom. It currently looks a bit like the picture (not my picture). The bed is against the chimney breast and we have some matching side drawers in the alcoves (although the lamps etc on them don't match and I like that).

We're not replacing the furniture. Husband has said no to shelves.
We don't have anything over the bed.

I've got an art deco mirror to hang in one alcove above the drawers. A bit like the picture but it's taller than it is wide and has colour around the edges. It doesn't really go I suspose but I loved it and have nowhere else to put it.

But what to put on the wall of the other alcove? I don't want an off the peg picture. We don't need any statement lamps or another mirror.

So interior masters, send your ideas my way please.

He has a tall bedside lamp and SAD lamp and I have a ball shaped sunrise clock. They don't even compliment each other in that funky quirky way and would probably give stylish people the heeby jeebies. 😁

The bedside tables match. It's just the lamps and stuff on top that don't. Sorry if that wasn't clear.

I’d put the mirror above the bed, then find some art you love for either side.

Millana · 07/12/2022 21:36

@MolesOnPoles I'm not putting anything above the bed, especially not something that could decapitate you if it fell off (OK a bit dramatic). Plus the mirror is too small for that anyway.

in that case find somewhere else for the mirror, or buy another one for the other side. It’s going to look very, very odd with it being so unbalanced!

Paint the alcove a different colour to the other walls and put a mirror or picture above the bed. X

LibertyLily · 08/12/2022 12:53

I agree that the mirror will look odd in one of the alcoves if you don't have another the other side. We have a pair of mirrors above our (non-matching, antique/vintage 🙄) bedside tables with matching lamps. Imho this works.
Is there nowhere else in the room to put the mirror? I'd find somewhere else (definitely not above the bed) for it and put art in the alcoves.

Thanks for all your replies.

I've attached an amazing diagram.

As you can see, the only other place is on the wall opposite the window but there isn't much room between the bed and wall. The mirror is also too small for that wall.

I can't put a mirror in the other alcove because I don't want to look at myself in the mirror while I'm at my desk. 🤣

There is literally nowhere else in the house to put the mirror but I love it. 😢

At the moment I have a full length mirror hanging over the back of the door. When we get a new wardrobe I'll be putting one on the inside of the wardrobe door.

if you are going with the art deco theme, I'd get some art deco posters or similar (you can buy a few calendars and get lots). frame them up in matching frames (or mismatch if you prefer) and put lots up. On the blank wall opposite the window as well as in the alcove. If you look carefully, you can find some great art that will not look generic.

Jellybean23 · 16/12/2022 23:21

My choice would be art deco wallpaper in the alcoves and no mirror.

A macrame hanging basket with a plant in ?

Vintage tapestry/wall hanging.

FWIW I don’t think it’ll look odd at all with a mirror one side and something else the other: matchy-matchy is a bit Next catalogue.
