Advice re mixing carpet- can't match for new stairs!

We've had a loft conversion and need a new stair carpet. We have a soft golden beige wool twist throughout the existing hall stairs and landing but finding it impossible to find a colour match. Do we go for something completely different? Is it going to look bizarre whatever we do? I don't want to replace the existing carpet as it is good quality and looks fine. Any suggestions?

On holiday this year, the very stylish house we stayed in had plain carpet in Bedrooms etc with a fabulous striped carpet on the stairs.

I loved it so much (and will copy it in my next house) I photographed it.

I would just get what I like and wouldn’t bother if it matched, as long as you like it that’s what matters

I think I would go different enough to make it obvious you weren't trying to match it.
So, a complimentary contrast.......

Striped runner, definitely. There are some fabulous ones out there.

I didn't expect to be linking to dunelm on this thread, but another option is to go for a textured completely different finish.

This works on a second story because they were traditionally maid's rooms, so taps in to a kind of visual narrative.

The sisal looks lovely but if you spill anything on it it will be ruined. You can't wet clean sisal.

The fine stripes might be lovely...? Hmm. Was it full carpet @Warmwesterly or just a runner?

Full hall, stairs and landing @Justkoko but the stair element was a turned runner.

I am really interested in interior design, having renovated a couple of really old properties and my first reaction was ‘wow’, my second to get my phone out and start snapping and my third to write to the owner to ask her what it was. Unfortunately she no longer had the details.

it wasn’t just that it was a stripe, it was the detail within the stripe. I am attaching a photo showing the bedroom carpets she had contrasted it with.

if you find one similar, please let me know. I am just about to re-carpet my HSL and have been looking for it.

Oh wow I do like that. My carpet is the same colour as the plain one! Do you think it would look odd just using the stripe on the stairs? It's only the stairs that need doing.

Is there anywhere else you could steal carpet from, e.g. Use the hall carpet for the loft stairs then put vinyl flooring in the hall
