This is my living room, and those are the cushions which came with my sofa 9 months ago. I've never been particularly fond of them.

I think I'd like to go for some pinks/greens/purples as I have my eye on some colourful art for the walls, but I'm not sure if I'm on the right track?

I have attached some of the colours I'm looking at, but can't quite decide whether to go for muted or brighter? Sorry pictures aren't great Blush

Thoughts please?

What look are you trying to achieve on the room? It looks a bit bland at the moment. A big rug with dark blue of the walls in it and maybe reds and golds. Then bold colours for cushions on your sofa. But that is what I like. Perhaps you want a softer muted look? I am not sure pinks and purples will work though.

How about these colours, it has the navy from the wall as well as softer, warmer colours

I'm trying to achieve some colour, to stop it feeling bland. But I also want it to be a relaxing room to be in.

You need a print with blues and greys and other complementary colours to bring it all together I think.

ThatshallotBaby · 30/11/2022 21:08

I think the plum and the pink.

I think you need to chose some art work you like, then choose cushions from the colours within that. Cushions are much easier to match after the rest of the room has been done. I think you also need a rug to soften and cosy up the room.

I'd definitely want to add a large colourful rug as well as some pattern! Do you have curtains/blinds that you can pull colours from?

The starting point for our living room (which we're currently redoing) are the two massive rugs - these have olive, cerise, turquoise and purple as the dominant colours. At one end we also have a dreaded feature chimney breast wall with vintage wallpaper in cream, olive, black and gold. Our remaining walls will be olive and whilst we have no curtains (huge wall of glass taking advantage of a view), I've chosen cushions in a crazy maximalist mash up of green/olive, cerise, orange, turquoise, purple and cream. Many of these are patterned/textured. We have a cream linen sofa and multi stripe love seat.

Our artwork and decorative objects (mostly stuff we've collected over many years) are also a wild mix of colours. Somehow it all works 😉

Thanks, but my last post was suggesting rugs Grin

The first rug is lovely then you can draw colours out of it for the other bits in your room.

LibertyLily · 01/12/2022 13:02

Love the first rug! Definitely not too much imho.

superdupernova · 01/12/2022 14:22

🤣whoops.

Agree that the first rug is lovely!

TerraNostra · 01/12/2022 14:27

Do you have any lamps that you could get colourful shades for?

I agree with a PP that varying textures of cushion is just as important as varying colours. We have some lovely jumbo cord ones, and a knitted one.

You've got a great amount of space but it all looks quite empty in the middle.

Lovely colour on the walls!

TerraNostra · 01/12/2022 14:28

The one thing I would say if you do get a rug is do not skimp on size. Nothing worse than a sad little rectangle in the centre with edges that people can trip on. You need to go really big.

LibertyLily · 01/12/2022 14:42

Agree with @TerraNostra re: rug size - they should ideally go under at least the front feet of the sofa(s) etc. Ours are huge and look so much better than small ones would 😀

I thought of this
Andrew Martin print but made by me

I was also going to suggest a rug, I’d do that first, to be honest.

Joyfuljolly · 03/12/2022 16:38

A nice spectrum rug would work

Joyfuljolly · 03/12/2022 16:39

Sorry the second rug works, I’d then tie your cushions into that
