Cold feet and navy paint

Help! My lovely friend has spent all day painting my little tenement flat hallway. I chose a navy paint hoping it would look bold, cosy and inviting. Now he’s done all the edging I’m starting to panic- it looks almost black. Could any body hold my hand and relay their stories of navy paint cold feet and subsequent happy endings??

Do you mean he’s only done the edging? If so, the contrast between the navy paint and whatever was on the walls will definitely make it look starker and darker.

I have a room painted dark navy (Dulux Night Jewels) and it’s the nicest room in the house. The decorator confessed afterwards that whilst starting he thought it was a bad choice and would be too dark but once it was finished he was impressed and loved it.

even if you don’t love it when it’s done, don’t forget that paint colour is only a small part of what makes a space look good so think about plants, coat racks or hooks, mirrors, shelves, pictures, rugs etc.

It's probably just because it's a thin strip on whitish walls at the moment. When it's all done it will look the colour you picked and any light/medium colours in the room (doors/floor/etc) will look a bit brighter.

Also you'll break it up with pictures.

Thank you- mines is House Beautiful Boutique Blues BB.39. I’ve wanted to do it for ages and add some gold / mid century accents, a couple of lovely big plants etc. I think I just got a bit of a shock at first.

It’ll look good once you add some gold. We had the same problem with dark purple, looked hideous when half done but lovely once the gold bits were done. Even the painter said “phew halfway through I was a bit worried”

A lot of rooms - particularly bold colours - really need the “stuff” before you can see the end result. It’s probably accessorised by dustsheets and a bare light bulb just now - no room will look great like that!

I love my navy wall. It’s broken up by some white picture frames and an oak beam for the log burner. It was scary when we first started painting as we have dark floor as well but it looks good now :)

It’s all painted now and drying down and I love it!! It’s a lovely rich blue and is just the kind of cosy feel I was originally hoping for. Can’t wait to add all the finishing pieces. Thanks for helping me stay the course, everybody!
