Help! DP painted room in rancid (old) paint

Hi

my DP has just opened a can of Farrow and Ball modern emulsion from 2020… and while he says he realised it might be ‘off’ as it did smell, has nonetheless gone ahead and painted a first coat in our DCs bedroom

😖

It now absolutely STINKS, something between old urine and rotten eggs. I can’t believe he went ahead and put it on!!

has anyone had experience of doing this before in error?

Did you find painting over it a couple of times with new paint solved the problem, or did you need to remove the lot with paint stripper?

Incidentally the paint looks fine… just v concerned by the toxic smell!

Thanks everyone

I think the smell will fade as it dries.

I have used up some rather smelly old paint in the past.

I'd wait till it dries and then wash the wall with water and bleach solution maybe a couple of times, and put a scented candle in the room to get rid of the smell. You don't need to strip it off.

Thanks everyone!! In the end we waited two days and the smell was still so awful we stopped the whole lot off. It really was rancid smelling though! Said on the tin 6 months only after opening…

Thanks for the bleach and water tip though. We would have tried that if it had been just slightly less disgusting I think.

now all freshly painted again. Can’t believe it’s taken this long!!!
