Is it possible to get a sofa through a 2nd floor window?! If so, how?!

I live in a second floor flat in a building with a fairly narrow staircase, and would like to buy a sofa. It might need to come in through the window. Does anyone know whether there is a type of vehicle (which could be hired in combination with a driver/operator) that would do this, and if so, what would it be called?! Thanks!!

Cherry picker. But it would be £££. Why don't you buy a modular sofa?

Pivot!

Are you sure it doesnt come in two?

Sunsnowsun · 24/09/2022 20:25

I think sofa.com does a couple of sofas that come in bits. Much easier to get in and out.

There are companies that can do it for you, the standard furniture store delivery men won’t do it.

You might have to order one of those sofas in a box if specialist delivery is too costly-at least you would be able to build it once you’ve had it delivered then.

I had to do this once, ordered a sofa, it didn’t fit. It went back to the shop to be redelivered by a company that does this for a living. They were going to pop the window frames out, but didn’t need to in the end, they just posted it in through the window. It cost about £100.
When I moved out the removals company did the opposite.

So I’d ask the sofa company as a start and then maybe a removals company.

I just got a sofa in a box from snug to my fifth floor flat. It’s a proper sold sofa when put together. Easy to assemble

theres a few sofa in a box options

I recommend

Have you just moved in or been there a while? My first thought was how did you get the current sofa in?

LionessesRules · 24/09/2022 20:33

Other possibilities are getting a sofa that comes apart, or finding an upholsterer who will saw the sofa in half, move it and put it back together. We had to do this when our sofa came out of the old house no problem, but couldn't be got into the new house. I couldn't quite believe it when the solution was proposed, but you honestly cant tell now.

Thank you very much for the replies.

I will be buying a 2nd hand sofa on eBay/fb marketplace, so will need to arrange my own delivery.

my current sofa was carried up the stairs and through the doorways, which was difficult. It has flat, squashy arms, so I don’t know whether a sofa in a different design would fit.

@SheWoreYellow That sounds brilliant! Was the removals company that removed it a specialist removals company?! Do I just ring various removals companies and ask whether they can get a sofa through a window, or is there a specific type of company I should look for?! Thanks!!

Can you get a big van close enough to the building.

Lift sofa onto roof of van then up through the window. My old neighbours used to do this 😁

Orangesare · 24/09/2022 20:46

If you’re buying a second hand sofa. Surely it’s cheaper to buy a new one that will fit up the stairs?

cuppawithtoast · 24/09/2022 20:52

A new one of the type I want would cost thousands!

It was just a normal removal company ☺️

cuppawithtoast · 24/09/2022 20:59

@SheWoreYellow Good to know - thank you!

By second floor I assume you mean the third story of the building - so the window might be around 8-9 metres from the ground? You’re not going to find a regular moving company that will lift 100kg+ of sofa 9m in the air without some specialist equipment. First floor maybe. And is your window even big enough?

You could always do some careful measuring of the staircase in your block to figure out what the maximum dimensions can be.

Call a removals company. I ordered massive handmade wardrobes that wouldn’t fit through my bedroom door 😂 They spent 2 weeks in my kitchen!!

I called a removals company. They hired scaffolding and sent 8 guys. They shifted the wardrobes within 40 mins. It cost me £700 🙈 Thankfully we have French doors with a Juliet balcony on the first floor. Otherwise the window would have had to come out!!

The cost made sense as I saved money overall versus having a carpenter build them on site.
