How should I arrange this sitting room?

Just that really! Floorplan attached below. The current layout has two sofas on either side but I can't help feeling that looks a bit like a doctors waiting room. Because of the position of the stairs and the bedroom/bathroom, there's a danger it will feel like a bit of a corridor. Or should I embrace that with an L shaped sofa along one of the long sides and then put into the middle of the room (if that makes sense). Or just one sofa and some arm chairs? Any ideas gratefully received!

And I forgot to add that there are built in cupboards (like a built in sideboard) along the wall where it says void. The void goes down to the kitchen.

It has transformed our space and made our sofa area feel really cosy and separate to the rest of the room.

Depends what you'll be using it for? Isn't your main sitting room? Is it a second one/snug? TV/cinema room? Do you have little ones who need floor space to play? Is the bedroom 5 going to be used as a bedroom?

It is the main sitting room. There's a separate kitchen diner/hanging out room downstairs though. The bedroom is going to be my DH's study / man cave and he'll use the bathroom. You correctly anticipated the presence of a small child (3) who does have quite a lot of crap which is an important consideration

The remnants of a fireplace are at the end but it's not a working one. There will be a TV but it can go wherever really.

I would embrace the corner dos j with furniture facing into the room

Not sure of dimensions you have but u shaped Sofa would be cosy
