Dark/ black painted woodwork on staircase??

Our hallway, stairs and landing are in need of a refresh. Under the influence of magazines and social media (😬) I’m keen on the look of very dark paint on staircase, bannisters and skirting boards with sisal or coir carpeting.
Has anyone any experience of the practical side of this? Will the paintwork show dust even more than the usual white gloss? Our current white has taken an absolute hammering over the years but that’s chips and dunts knocked out of them by the dc…
All thoughts and suggestions are most welcome!

Someone I know did this. They constantly looked like dusty chalkboards.

Oh god🤣🤣🤣 What a perfect description! Also exactly what I was scared of. Will check out dust coloured paint- blue grey perhaps.

I am really keen on this look and want to do it, but I am a complete slattern and fear it will just be a dusty mess. Maybe it will make me a bit more houseproud?!

Dials I’m worried I’d resent it even more for pressuring me!

I painted the banister bits and bobs black and haven't noticed a difference in dust. Though, tbf, I happily ignore it usually.

Ours are dark and the dust shows up no more than it did when they were white. Looks great too, imho!

Right this is confusing the issue now!

Gloss or satinwood or eggshell?

I did it, its a bit more dusty and have to be careful with chipping, but I love it. Did it in f&b off black, well johnstone's version of it.

We did our stairs in Little Greene Lamp Black eggshell about three years ago, although we painted the stair treads too as I've wallpapered the risers. Three years on it's showing signs of wear - although DH likes this aged look 😉 - and I'll be redoing it soon.

Regarding the dust/muck issue, we have two dogs who - whilst not being of the shedding variety - are like velcro, bringing every bit of grass, leafage and other crap indoors, so I do find myself sweeping/hoovering the stairs more often than in our last house with its carpeted staircase. I think dust is probably more noticeable on a dark background, but the other stuff would be there regardless.

We painted our banisters and spindles in Mylands Sinner (eggshell), white walls in the hall and stairs, lots of artwork, oyster woodwork (skirts, string) and beige woollen carpets (inherited those, will change to sisal/sisal imitation when we can). The black makes a great sharp feature among the white and neutral and we have a dog, and big messy DS with big messy trainers, and the dust is no more noticeable than when the banisters was dark wood.
