help with oak worktop for kitchen island

I plan to have oak on kitchen island, quartz on rest of kitchen. The island is fairly long and narrow.

I plan to use full stave oak ie full planks running the whole 3m length. Would more narrower planks (aprox 10cm wide) make it look wider than using wider planks?

It costs far more for wider planks and looks lovely but I wondered if more planks might have a widening effect and hence save me money.

No, it'll make it look narrower.
Wider planks will make it look wider.
Sorry.

Won't it be difficult to look after? Mats for every hot drink and plate?

Would you consider quartz here too instead?

Thanks. It is an island with no sink/hob and will be 4cm thick so can easily be sanded down and re oiled if it does damage but it is a period house so am happy with aged look (although not a single burn!). Island is old fashioned style with open pot ends. Quartz worktops will be white and there will already be huge amount of that ie 8m and 4m run so dont want a 3m island too or it will look too clinical i think.

So it's kind of equivalent to a wooden table.

I'm sure it will look very good. I would go for the wider boards as it will look more imposing. Think of wide floorboards in a very old house as opposed to narrow ones which look, somehow, fussier.

Have you had wooden work tops before ? I have and wouldn't have them again.
