Curtains - made to measure or alter ready made?

Hi all
We need some long curtains for our living room in a non standard size. Made to measure are so expensive, I'm thinking about getting ready made and then paying to have them altered. Has anyone done this? Or is it best just to suck up the extra £100 or so and get them made to measure to start with?

You can't beat made to measure in my opinion.

Add up the cost of your time and your driving to the seamstress and her charges before you make a decision.

I think Dunelm do curtain alterations to their ready made curtains, I have never used this service though

Thanks so much - I just checked with Dunelm and they can do alterations if you buy curtains in store!

I bought curtains for £45, seamstress asks for her job £35 to shorten them. A lot, but still cheaper than made- to measure. If the ultimate goal is to save, and you have some time, I'd do ready-made.

I've got ready made curtains altered quite a few times. Its true, made to measure are gorgeous, but getting a ready made set altered is so much cheaper, and as long as you take time to measure carefully they'll still fit exactly. If you ask on your local Facebook group you can usually find a good seamstress who'll be able to alter curtains for you.

I think you'll find that made to measure are a lot costlier than £100 more than ready maxes.
Can you sew at all? Do you have a sewing machine?
