I’m very excited to be getting a new stair carpet fitted in a few weeks, but before it arrives I need to tart up the paintwork on the bannister.
When we moved in the decorator stained it a dark mahogany, which looks beautiful. However, I’m not sure whether they hadn’t prepped properly, but it has always felt sticky since. I cannot remember what it was like previously as we had to gut and decorate the whole house!
I really don’t want to make it worse by painting straight over it. I’ve a feeling I need to strip it off, either with turps or sanding?? I really don’t want to make a huge mess though and don’t have much time!
any help much appreciated. Can I DIY this one or best to get in a pro? I’m after a glossy varnished wooden look. I think this was a stain that was applied.
