Ex always battoned curtain poles.

Now I'm learning DIY for myself after 20yrs, I'm thinking do I actually need to batton as Google is offering conflicting advice.

Do you batton curtain poles?

We do where we live now because it's an old house and it's hard to get a decent fixing straight into the wall - when you drill it tends to crumble and the hole is suddenly bigger than it should be. In previous (newer) houses we've not had to bother.

Short answer - if it's a solid wall (ie not a stud wall that sounds hollow and a drill pops right through), and it doesn't crumble and seems to make a neat hole, you don't need a batton.

Use decent wall fixings (I like Fischer Duopower plugs for just about everything), check you’re drilling into brick and not mortar if it’s a brick wall (red dust not beige), and you’ll probably be OK. If the brackets still fall down, you need a batten.
