Hessian curtains or rough linen curtains in a pale taupe for the window. A mirror over the fireplace (add a chunky mantel shelf?) would bring it together. Perhaps a complimentary print or picture with a botanical theme if you don't like mirrors. Lovely room!

I have a 60s mirror . Wood , round, like the table..i have pics but cant put up yet as want curtians first.
Thanks so much ! What lenght curtian do u think , floor or just below sill ?

Full length curtains every time. I second rough linen or hessian, taupe, cream. Velvet would be wrong I think, too heavy looking for the room.

@Givemesunshines

i LOVE your room!! It looks fabulous!

but tell me, why can't you put up the mirror before you get the curtains??

id go with dark green velvet curtains (colour of the wall paper/rug). Full length. I have a similar problem, but My window is a little bit higher off the floor & I also have a radiator under the window.

what was the look in the 50's?? I suspect short & not velvet as I assume post war fabric was still quite expensive?? (I should look these things up before embarrassing myself, not knowing!! But that's not going to happen.)

I would go full length velvet (for warmth!) in the pale sage of the wallpaper.

I'm a bit of a traditionalist when it comes to decor but that room is truly beautiful.

ClaphamLane · 30/08/2022 19:01

It what you were asking, but I think I would add another colour too. Perhaps a tiny addition of some orange - on a couple of cushions, ornaments, books.

Givemesunshines · 30/08/2022 19:40

Thank you all !
I am going to add deep raspberry velvet cushions or / and terrocotta cushions s.
With orla keily art work and possibily brutalist photo images .

“I am going to add deep raspberry velvet cushions or / and terrocotta cushions s.

I think linen in the same green as the rug, 6” below the sill.

BasiliskStare · 30/08/2022 19:51

If it were me ( which it is not ) I would go full length roman blinds on that window in a nice colour / pattern ) and then you can get them full length or keep them just above the sill , radiator )

What a lovely room! The raspberry highlights will be great too.

For me, natural lineny curtains, or possibly a navy blue or charcoal colour.

BruceAndNosh · 30/08/2022 20:17

I'd keep the curtains pale, your windows look like pvc so I assume double glazed so hopefully not cold.
50s look would be short curtains but I'd go long, linen in a pale beigey taupe.
Once you add your contrast bits in raspberry, dark curtains would look too heavy.

If you want made to measure but budget won't allow, try buying ready made and getting them altered.
My mum wanted Laura Ashley curtains for a small window in her spare room and it was cheaper to buy ready mades (and adjust them) than for me to buy the fabric and make them (for free)
I've bought ready mades and tweaked the heading to make them look bespoke with a quarter of the effort of making from scratch
