Kitchen dilemma

Hi. Just looking for some advice. We have a rayburn which sits in a recess in the kitchen, which is boxed covering an old chimney breast (not in good condition) . We are having a new kitchen soon and while taking out old cupboards we exposed chunky water pipes either side of the outside of the recess. Having changed the kitchen layout these would now be visible. My other half decided it would be best to extend the boxing in either side to cover the pipes. The plasterer came today to start the job, unfortunately with the new boxing in this has left the sides widths 4cm different. Do I leave them at this and except the pipes are covered and just live with it? or do I ask the plasterer to make them the same size and expose part of the pipework in the top corner? My other half said leave it as is, but wanted to check if anyone else has seen this in a home or has any ideas? Thank you in advance for your help
