How do I get this chair to work in a room?

We have been given this chair. I think it's pretty ugly, but it is the comfiest thing I have ever sat in so I really want to love it.

We need to redecorate the living room anyway, including getting new armchair / sofa so I'm hoping for ideas about how to make it look less old fashioned. It's just such a yellow cream colour...

I think I probably need to own it rather than try to disguise iykwim? The room will have the chair, a sofa, a coffee table, TV stand, fireplace and bookshelves in the fireplace alcove. Currently all white ikea (old, chipped and battered from years or moving rentals) which we were looking to upgrade at some point anyway.

I would add a thick sheepskin throw/ rug across the back in a mink or light grey colour depending on the other colours in the room. And maybe another smaller patterned throw over the footstool but that’s not imperative.

You can definitely make it work. Life is too short for uncomfortable furniture, if it’s truly the most comfortable thing you’ve sat on then it’s earned it’s place!

Add a small side table with a lamp and a pile of books so you have a place for your coffee/wine etc and you’re sorted!

It looks like IKEA so you can probably get covers for it.

EBay search the name of it and see

Is it a Stressless chair? We were gifted one too that looks identical, agree it is sooooo comfortable, ours is hidden in a spare room as we can't make it fit anywhere. Would be interested in thoughts/ideas. Ps I didn't realise how expensive they are!

Loose covers?

dolphinsarentcommon · 22/08/2022 10:51

Could you have it re upholstered? It would look completely different in a fabric.

Otherwise throws and cushions to suit your colours

I think you have several options here

  1. just say it is your homage to Star Trek or Dr who & put a lava lamp by the side of it 😀

  2. if you look at the construction if the seats / back arms rests / footstools come off with screws etc you do not have to be terribly handy to cover them with a staple gun - if it is all glued together - less easy

  3. Do get a quote for covering - but rehupholstery can be expensive so then it would depend on budget for replacing other stuff

  4. Throws and cushions (especially when throws are tucked in ) can make a difference

Hope you find an answer - all best Basilisk

I love the homage to Star Trek/ dr who Lava lamp, genius!
you also need a grey cat ala blofeld.

i guess you could paint the wood whiteish and put snuggly fake fur throws on.
owning it sounds more interesting!

Ha! We have the exact same chair in navy from Ebay and it was dh's Xmas present. He sat in one at a friend's and said it was the only thing he wanted. They are so comfy. We have an eclectic sort of room anyway with no particular style but the colour sort of goes as we have a dark blue, grey and pale yellow going on in the room with wood floors and I like to think it's a seventies sort of vibe as the house is seventies. I hated it at first but now it's my favourite place to sit. Ours even has a hideous little round table attached which I was going to take off, but to be honest that is so handy for my coffee mug while I'm reading a book, I'm putting up with it.

RatherBeRiding · 22/08/2022 15:36

Looks like an Ekornes Stressless. Cherish it! I agree about getting it reupholstered to suit your decor.

donttalkaboutbookclub · 22/08/2022 15:36

Also, in terms of styling it, I do put a throw over the headrest and a cushion on it to soften the all out leather look of it.

neerg · 22/08/2022 16:03

I don't know about the styling but I had on of those in our holiday home last year and I agree, it is the most comfortable thing ever. I even took a photo of it!!!!

Headshothelp · 22/08/2022 16:27

Thanks all, I'm glad I'm not alone. And those who have sat it one know

I'll have a play with thows and cushions, buy a lava lamp (a la @BasiliskStare ) and a 70s sideboard and just go with the flow. It's comfy enough to redecorate the whole room around!

@binfire a faux fur throw over the footstool is genius, love that idea. Will probably do a different texture up top and go for intentionally eclectic...

@stinky I know re price! 😱

Make sure you get your lava lamp from Mathmos

BruceAndNosh · 22/08/2022 22:50

We have similar in black in a mostly cream beige blonde wood room.
I have ikea cream sheepskin thrown over the back and another over the footstool plus a liitle toning cushion which covers a bit of the seat.

avamiah · 22/08/2022 22:53

I would buy a nice throw and cushion to add some colour but I like it.

PokemonPasta · 24/08/2022 08:06

You could try dyeing the leather
