Too heavy handed with filler

I got some good advice on here last week so thought I would ask another question...

I have to deal with lots of drawing pin holes in the wall before painting.

I'm usually too heavy handed with the filler and end up with bulges... any advice please?

You just have to sand the bulges flat after!

Fill and rub down, then fill and rub down, then do it again!

Yes that's the best way. You want it to bulge a bit rather than be left with dips. Then you sand it flat once it's totally dry. It sands down really easily. If you don't gave any, get a multipack of different sandpapers, then you'll always have some handy.

Sandpaper works a treat.

Ok thanks. I'm talking big bulges here 😂. Decorating is not my strength ... I'll give it a good go.

Have you got a scraper to apply it with? Like this

I do!

I think I'm probably not being patient enough with the sanding part.

If you are yet to do the job, OP, Toutpret filler is great. It dries quickly and is easy to sand flat. So, while not leaving huge bumps is the best solution, using a product that doesn't take forever to sand down is a good substitute while you improve your filler-application skills!

Don’t know about OP BigSkies but I’m running out filler so just ordered some, it sounds great. Thanks!

If you have really overdone it with filler, you can use a metal file for filing down the bulk of it and just finish off with sandpaper. Metal file is a lot quicker.
