All this white is starting to look the same

At first I liked all the white as I thought I was a refreshing change from the dreaded grey. I have painted our new hallway white.
But now when I lol on Instagram, dream home makeover etc everything is starting to look exactly the same. Literally every house has the same look. White walls, Persian rugs, macrame, big green plants etc. etc.
We have got our kitchen/ diner to do next and just feeling a bit meh about all the trends as think will date fast. No idea what I can do instead.

that's insta for you, ruins all tends as it's a sea of homogenous interiors & trends are everywhere before they get started.

Don't look on instagram & do what you love is my advice.

Lemonblossom · 02/08/2022 21:37

All trends date. I think white is less likely to than others (but I have off white throughout with vintage Persian rugs and lots of plants!)

zaza687 · 02/08/2022 22:07

Don't follow trends

AgathaX · 02/08/2022 22:12

What colours do you actually like?

Spino · 02/08/2022 22:20

Ignore what's popular, especially if you're looking at Instagram for ideas, and choose colours you like. It's much more original and less likely to date if you choose something you like rather than something you think you should like.

Everyone's home looks exactly the same on Instagram, and they all think they're original with their godawful gold drinks trolley and Margo Mc Daid wall prints. I've unfollowed all home accounts for that reason.

Green has always been my fave colour. I ve gone green in the lounge and think I’ve struck a reasonable balance between current and stuff I love. Eg I’ve gone for heavy patterned curtains I love despite everything appearing to be about shutters or very neutral Curtains. And yes I have gone for lots of big green plants a la insta! Just feeling a bit meh about the kitchen options out there.

We inherited, from the previous owners, a very shiny white kitchen with grey quartz worktops.

I've gone for green on the walls - Lick 09. I would be blinded by glare if it was white as I was advised by an interior decorator.

I'm trying not to use the same colour in all the grey bathrooms.

Go for what you love - trends are just trends.

DappledThings · 03/08/2022 18:12

Go with whatever you like and don't worry about it dating. Our kitchen walls are yellow. I think it looks bright and lovely. Lots of people would probably hate it.

whereamu · 03/08/2022 18:18

I love white but have resisted doing the whole house in it as I think it will look boring - I didn't realise it's a trend!
Maybe this is the excuse I need!
I love blue too but think these are too cold!
I want a warm light blue kitchen but can't find the right shade.

I agree with PP. use a mix of your favourite colours and colours that work in the space and with the light that it gets.

we recently painted a roon a dark, smoky lavender colour - very rich pigments, not at all mauve, almost like cocoa. it looks great in a room that has a feel of a library about it with velevt sofas, bookcases and musical instruments, but it's not at all a fashionable colour. When I took a photo of it, it looked like I'd been over to visit someone's grandparents. but irl, it looks fresh and welcoming and lovely. what looks great on insta/a photo doesn't always look best in real life.

Forestdweller11 · 03/08/2022 18:39

I think insta is a bit like other social media you end up talking into a bell jar. I follow quite a few interior influencers. My feed has no white in it whatsoever.. It's either the dark green/blue or ice-cream shades, or modern wood and line plaster or a tiny bit of Mrs hinch grey. My taste.

I still love our kitchen walls painted sage (white units). Not sure how many trends ago that was from but I like it.

averythinline · 07/08/2022 10:36

@goldfinchonthelawn which lavender did you use, am struggling to find one that works! Changing mh bathroom from french grey..which i love but really fancy a change!

Re the white thing my kitchen diner is painted white but i have boldish blue units and mix ....all other rooms have colour! Mainly shades of green...love f&b cooking apple for a coolish room, french grey in the bathroom, sage in the bedroom!!

How long are you planning to stay in ghe house? I almost got a green kitchen (diy kitchens you can get painted colour you want) with white looks v fresh!

mamacoast · 07/08/2022 18:18

Start with your favourite colours, prints, textures - do what you like now and know you will still enjoy living with in 5 years. It's your home and sanctuary and trends will come and go but if you follow your instincts you have made the right decisions for you.

This is our forever home. I do like the idea of a green kitchen with light walls.
Our last kitchen was white walls, painted in 2011. Mainly because we painted bare plaster white as a first coat then couldn’t be bothered doing another and thought it looked ok. Well ahead of the trend! We liked it thought. As every time a child scribbled on the wall ( regular occurance) could just go over with cheap white paint, not worry about the colour match.
Any way it’s looking like I might have to wait anyway as the looming recession might put our plans back a couple of years!!
