Help me jazz up this kitchen

It’s almost brand new so it feels wasteful putting a new one in but it’s not really my cup of tea. The rest of the kitchen is a mix of wall/floor units and full height larder units. All have the same doors and handles. Sink is basic silver coloured sink and mixer tap. Blind is plain white roller.

Im thinking new paint colour, new hardware on the drawers and cupboards etc. Happy to replace sink etc. Happy to spend on this stuff to dress up the basics.

Can anyone give me inspiration? What would you do if it were yours? 😊

Think we need a pic.

takeitandleaveit · 30/07/2022 13:28

I'd buy a plant and put it on the windowsill.

<waits for photo of kitchen, probably already with plant>

Ohexcellent · 30/07/2022 13:51

@Sunnysideup @takeitandleaveit Would have been helpful wouldn’t it 🙄🤣

Not in the property yet so have no other pics unfortunately!

Start with new cupboard handles?
how about a marble worktop to replace the quote cheap looking wood one?
looks quite nice though! Congratulations

anotherscroller · 30/07/2022 13:53

*quite

Ohexcellent · 30/07/2022 13:54

That picture makes it look quite grey I think. Walls are a pale icy blue. It just feels very plain...

New silver handles, a nice deep sage colour on the walls and plants.

RinklyRomaine · 30/07/2022 17:00

Those handles are not my thing at all! I'd change those for something interesting, add a deeper colour on the walls and masses of plants, although my kitchen is like my granny's greenhouse so maybe don't go that mad.

Sunnysideup · 30/07/2022 17:09

Yeah the cheap handles have to go. Personally I’d do navy on the wallls and then add brass handles.

minipie · 30/07/2022 17:09

Handles are actually quite difficult to change as you need ones where the holes are in the same places. It’s worth a look though in case you can find the right size easily.

That wall colour is definitely not doing it any favours. I would either go with white (try to match the tiles) or a proper colour. Sage as a pp suggested could work well, would look nice with the floor, or a grass green or navy if you’re feeling braver. Me I’d probably go with white to keep it light and spacious, and bring interest in elsewhere, but depends if you are a colour person.

I would change those silly hanging rails for some chunky oak shelves (not too deep) and put some plants and ceramics/nice looking food storage pots on them.

I would also try to build in storage above the (I presume) fridge on the left - otherwise the top of the fridge will inevitably attract dust and clutter.

The sink and tap sound fine to me. If you wanted to spend that kind of money I’d be more inclined to change the extractor as it’s very dominant.

DialsMavis · 30/07/2022 17:12

I actually don't mind the handles. I would change the work top and paint the walls a dark colour.

This is all great advice imo

Ohexcellent · 30/07/2022 23:02

Thanks everyone 😊 some really great advice!!

The extractor is really not to my taste at all. It’s definitely on the list of changes 👍🏻 I had been thinking some kind of green on the walls, change the hardware, new extractor, change the hanging rails.

Storage on top of the fridge is a great idea! I hadn’t thought of that at all 😊

Change the handles to something that stands out a bit more.
Wooden shelves with a variety of items on including small plants or herbs.
Maybe consider green for the walls. There are lots of white kitchens with green walls around.

That's a subtle change but you could go bolder.

WhoKnowsProbsNotMe · 30/07/2022 23:15

I painted mine (and changed a couple of f*clef doors) don’t get me wrong to do it properly was HORRIFIC! And I cried more than once but 6 months down the line it was totally worth it! X

This is nice too

The handles look like these from ikea ingka.page.link/WwrM2h4z1uGnWECq6 which gives you the distance apart of the holes.

Echo what others have said re painting the walls a dark colour. Is it the fridge to the left? Is it integrated? If it is an ikea kitchen then you could potentially add another cupboard on top? That height always feels so awkward and like you'd end up shoving random crap on top of it and it looks untidy.

butterfly990 · 30/07/2022 23:32

Granite transformations can add a veneer to the worktops or even tiles.

BruceAndNosh · 30/07/2022 23:33

Buy (and return!) some cheap handles from B&Q to try out so you can see what s/steel, nickel, brass or black looks like.
I'm currently lusting after some handles from Corston Architectural

@ohyeahiwaittablestoo Pretty sure it is an IKEA kitchen. The handles are definitely IKEA.
the fridge isn’t integrated. We’ll be buying a new fridge freezer when we get the keys and can measure up so I’ll definitely try and look at a way of utilising the space above 👍🏻

@BruceAndNosh Great idea about trying the various colours of hardware. Corston have gorgeous handles don’t they?! My phone is currently full of screenshots from them, Plank Harware, Pushka and Buster & Punch 🤣 I now like so many that it will take me weeks to decide! Haha.

Thank you for all the great ideas guys. We’re just waiting on our house purchase completing 🤞🏼 the kitchen is only 2 years old so I’m reluctant to go to the cost and hassle of replacing it when it’s gut so much life in it! Your ideas are making me feel much better about just giving it a little more personality 😊

takeitandleaveit · 31/07/2022 14:36

I agree with sage colour for the walls, and perhaps brushed chrome handles for the cupboard doors? Maybe try and co-ordinate with the oven door handle.

What's the flooring like?

JustAnotherViper · 31/07/2022 16:45

Do you like the configuration? Do you like any part of it?

it may well be more cost effective to sell the kitchen and buy what you want OR if you’re happy with the configuration sell the doors/countertop/extractor/etc and replace to your preference.

Ohexcellent · 02/08/2022 12:03

@takeitandleaveit Wood flooring. If you click on the picture you can see a small bit of it 😊

@JustAnotherViper I’m not a huge fan of any of the kitchen tbh! It’s not at all what I would have done. BUT, it’s been very recently done and realistically is fine for now. Long term we plan on extending and putting in a full new kitchen so I’m happy just giving this kitchen a little more personality for now then putting in a kitchen that we love later 👍🏻
